I've given myself a challenge for our home library--have at least one quality, well-written fiction book (preferably a children's chapter book or YA novel) set in every country on earth. I have a few already (Russia, France, India, UK, to name a few) but the vast majority of countries I don't have anything for!

I'd love some recommendations!

Isabel Allende has written a series of young adult books, beginning with City of the Beasts, which is set in the Amazon rain forest, followed by Kingdom of the Golden Dragon (the Himalayas) and Forest of the Pygmies (Kenya).

Specific suggestions are my short suit here, but this is the type of question that led me to put a lot of time into international awards lists (though they still need a lot more work!).

These posts are a good place to start:

Beyond that, the "Related Awards" lists could keep you clicking indefinitely.

Listen Slowly - South Vietnam. Though I would definitely recommend the audio version, as at a couple of points, the language itself is highlighted, and the reader gives it up beautifully.

The Reading Globally group will probably be very helpful for you: https://www.librarything.com/groups/readinggloballyficti

Author Ann Morgan took on a similar challenge, and wrote about it in The World Between Two Covers.

I'll suggest The Circle for Sweden.

For Botswana, I'd suggest The Akimbo Adventures by Alexander McCall Smith.

I did an around the world challenge but most of mine were non-fiction. Check out my library ("around the world" tag) to see my picks.

I've created Google maps with titles and locations for my reading in the past three years (2014, 2015, 2014), There are links to them from my blog http://marista.blogspot.com/

As >5 Cecrow: mentioned, we have threads upon threads dedicated to books from certain countries and regions of the world in the Reading Globally group.

If you can't find a book via traditional means, that is the group where you'll find it.

A book by Patrick White for Australia or if you want something more for younger people a May Gibbs both may now be considered a bit old hat. Just two that pop to mind without putting much thought into it.

I hope the OP is still around. S/he hasn't posted again, and no cataloging activity for a month.
