I'm trying to remember the name of any book in the SciFi series about telepathic trees that were used for instant communication between galactic worlds.
On the trees' home world they are revered and read to by acolytes. Anything said to any one tree is instantly heard by every tree no matter where in the universe it is located.
One of the characters in the second or third book in the series was an acolyte named Bonito. He read to the trees and was eventually absorbed by them only to be reborn as a tree golem. In that form, he was able to verbally communicate for the trees with the humans.
The trees were subsequently attacked on their home world by their historic fire ball enemy. Bonito ultimately lead the trees, which blasted off into space as tree rockets, to defeat the fire ball enemy by attacking them on the enemy's own home planet. Humanity had also been threatened by the fire balls so the trees ended up saving humanity.
