Just been on Oxfam's web-site - they have an online book sale until 12noon 3rd March to celebrate World Book Day - you might find something you'd like

Damn — Missed my chance by an hour. A bit OT I once read that Oxfam are UK's biggest 2nd-hand bookseller. By the way I often put books in the Oxfam recycling bin at a local supermarket in Inverness. Does anyone know if such books just all go to the local shop? I sometimes worry that some books deserve a better fate and could fetch a bigger price elsewhere.

>3 PossMan: Oxfam (and indeed most charity chains) have centralised processing facilities, which then redistribute goods back to shops deemed to be in the most suitable areas. How much care/thought would go into a few books I don't know. But brand name clothing are likely to appear in more affluent suburbs, and are generally not sent to shops in the same area they came from.

>3 PossMan: I once sorted books at a general-purpose Oxfam shop. We tried to identify items likely to have more than face value (first editions, signed copies, etc.) and sent them to the nearby Oxfam bookshop, where they had more chance of selling as collectables than at the general shop. I'd guess books from supermarket collection points are sorted similarly, as >4 reading_fox: said.

>1 justmum: Thank you. I used the sale as an excuse to celebrate my Thing-unaversary. My Thingaversary is on the 29th of February, so properly I don't get one this year, although Tim Spalding presumably disagrees; I got my Fiver-badge on St David's Day. Anyway, I bought copies of:
A descriptive catalogue of the marine collection to be found at India House
Hakluyt Society, The Hakluyt handbook, 2 volume set
P. E. H. Hair & R. C. Bridges (eds), Compassing the vaste globe of the earth : studies in the history of the Hakluyt Society, 1846-1946

Not so. http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop?intcmp=header-logo "The sale runs until 11.59 pm, 3 March 2017." Midnight. You've still got three hours.
