I've decided to go for 120 books in 2008. Last year I challenged myself to read 80 and reached 107 I believe.
To add to my challenge, I've decided that I want at least 20 of the 120 books to be nonfiction, and at least 10 of the 120 books to be classics.
Happy New Year everyone!

1. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
I had to work up to reading this one, because in general I avoid reading what I assume will be depressing stories, but this was a very rewarding read. I'm definitely going to read A Thousand Splendid Suns as well.
Now I must contemplate my vast TBR list. Some upcoming books might include:
The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes (not from the Early Reviewer program, but I snagged an ARC from my Barnes & Noble)
I Love You, Beth Cooper by Larry Doyle
Sullivan's Island by Dorothea Benton Frank
A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo
Widow of the South by Robert Hicks
The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay
Day Watch and Twilight Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko
A Spell of Winter by Helen Dunmore
The Bronx is Burning by Jonathan Mahler
Riddle Master trilogy by Patricia A. McKillip
Bloody Jack by Louis A. Meyer
The Complete Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult
The Frog Prince by Jane Porter
The Interpretation of Murder by Jed Rubenfeld
and more! A long list, but I'm looking forward to working my way through. I might try to read a non-fiction book next to begin meeting my goal of 20 non-fiction books this year.

2. See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson
This is my first Rachel Gibson, but I will definitely be reading more! This contemporary romance was funny and engaging, and I love the inclusion of hockey--not a typical sport in romance. I liked that each character had 'issues,' but their problems never overshadowed the romance and brought down the fun tone, but simply rounded out the characters' personalities and lives.

3. The Terror by Dan Simmons
Possible Spoilers, but nothing too overt
Overall I was very pleased with this read, because it worked for me on multiple levels. The historical detail was fascinating, and the novel made me more curious about the actual Franklin expedition. Simmons' imagining of the historical events seemed plausible, but most importantly, it was interesting--I enjoyed reading about the intricate politics and power-plays in the navy, the practical difficulties that the men faced, and about how varying degrees of education and personality can condition humans to respond so differently in times of crisis. The supernatural twist would not have worked without this strong foundation.
I did enjoy the supernatural element of the story as well, though I admit it was frustrating that the story did not explain the creature until so late in the novel.
Overall I'd recommend this read, though I admit the book did become just a little tedious in the middle. However, Simmons gripped me again in the last 300 pages or so.
On the downside, the book is so big that I had to read it on a table when my thumb started to hurt from holding it up :-/

From your TBR pile, I would recommend A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers. It is different and may sound formulaic, but it works.
That is the only title I have read from your list, but I liked it.

Oh thanks alphaorder, I'm glad to hear you enjoyed A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers--I actually got a free ARC from the Barnes & Noble at which I worked, so I thought it sounded interesting and I grabbed it on a whim, so I'm happy to know that it's pretty good.

5. The Bronx is Burning by Jonathan Mahler
I only first became aware of this book because of the ESPN miniseries, which was advertised with large ads on the subways. Once I looked the book up, I thought it sounded like an interesting read that would give me a little insight about NYC history (as I am a new resident of NYC). I enjoyed the book very much--it provided an interesting portrait of one turbulent year in NYC history, and included a variety of different facets in its study, including baseball, politics, journalism, and crime. I even enjoyed reading about the baseball (though I think baseball is second only to golf for the title of 'most boring sport ever') because Mahler's study was more about the power struggles between the players, manager, and front office than the actual game itself. Though I prefer more academic, in-depth history books, this was an engaging and informative introduction to NYC history.

6. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
Somehow I managed to go through childhood without reading the Anne series, so I recently bought a box set. Today I read the first book, and was utterly charmed. Though it seemed more like a series of very individual stories rather than a novel, I really enjoyed reading about Anne's journey from a precocious orphan to an accomplished young woman. The book has a pleasant feel-good quality, without Anne coming off as too Pollyanna-ish. The story also included some surprises--for instance, the distressing revelation that orphans were viewed more as potential servants to help care for their new parents' family rather than children to be cared for. Altogether, I'm looking forward to the rest in the series.

9. Messenger of Truth by Jacqueline Winspear
In the fourth adventure of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and private investigator, Maisie takes on the case of Georgina Bassington-Hope, who believes that her artist brother's 'accidental' death might have been murder.
I very much enjoyed this installment of the Maisie Dobbs mysteries. Ms. Winspear devises such interesting and unique plot lines, and the characters and settings are portrayed in detail that truly brings the period and characters to life. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
On a downside, Ms. Winspear will be visiting the Mystery-themed independent bookstore in my home town next month, but, alas, I no longer live at home so I cannot attend! I have recruited my father to get me a signed book though :-)

10. Hero by Perry Moore
Fantastic! Because I tend to read books that feature female protagonists (not intentionally, I apparently am just more attracted to those books), I rarely read books about adolescent men. This one was a real treat--I loved how Moore added the superhero twist to a coming-of-age story, and also thought that Moore created a teenage hero with realistic human emotions and difficulties.

Though it was a little slow in parts, overall I really enjoyed this interesting and sometimes hilarious travel memoir about the two years J. 15. The Frog Prince by Jane Porter
This chick-lit novel was decent but not great. Holly Bishop, only 25 and recently divorced, as moved to San Francisco to get a new job and start a new life. Over the course of the book, she gets over her ex and begins dating again (with sometimes disastrous results), begins to become a successful event planner, and learns that before she expects anybody else to love her, she has to love herself. The book was an easy and readable read, though I thought the anti-fairy tale theme was a bit repetitive. I do like that the book was more about finding and loving yourself than finding a man.

16. Bloody Jack by Louis A. Meyer
This was a fantastic historical Young Adult novel. Since she was orphaned, Mary 'Jacky' Faber has lived with her gang on the streets of London, begging and thieving to survive. After the leader of her gang is killed, Jacky decides to pursue her dream of sailing the high seas, and after disguising herself as a boy, she is chosen to be a ship's boy on the HMS Dolphin. Aboard the ship, Jacky experiences the practical difficulties of keeping her gender a secret, goes through puberty, and falls in love with a fellow ship's boy to whom she can't reveal her true identity. And she must constantly wonder what will happen if she is caught...
This was a truly entertaining and engaging read. Jacky has a great voice--the voice of a girl who faced hardship and is not naive about how to survive. However, she is also unmistakably female and wants all the things that go along with that (i.e. attention from the boys she likes and a desire for romance). The historical detail was interesting, and I liked that Meyer did not shy away from portraying some of the worse aspects of life in the royal navy.
All in all, I very much look forward to continuing the series.

18. The Summer Tree by Guy Gavriel Kay *POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
Overall I found the book enjoyable, though I definitely couldn't just speed through the book--the mythology, history, and many characters in the narrative required close attention to understand. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy, and hope that the fates of some of the characters improve later on.
One thing bothered me though. All the main male characters in the novel were going around getting laid ALL THE TIME. Women just wandered into their rooms at night through the whole freaking book. The main female characters in the novel? Celibate, raped, or otherwise used and abused. I hope that some actual relationships form in the subsequent books, because this trend was starting to drive me nuts.
19. The Bad Beginning, or, Orphans! (A Series of Unfortunate Events) by Lemony Snicket
I knew that these books were actually pretty dark for kid's books, but even knowing ahead of time, I was a little startled by how disturbing the book is. I still look forward to the rest of the series, though.

Generally I'm disappointed with my progress! I've fallen behind! This mostly has to do with the fact that I started a new job and all of a sudden had a lot less time than I did previously, but I've also been going online or watching TV when I could be reading. I also need to be more diligent about taking a book to read on the subway instead of listening to my iPod.
