Stuck in the 70's?

Ok, I am sure we all have fond memories of the greatest decade in the history of the world. What sticks out in your mind?
For me it was the love of my skateboard, Starsky and Hutch, and the music. I wasn't that much of a reader back then unless you count the teen magazines but I had a radio in my ear everywhere I went.
I almost feel sorry for the kids today. They don't know what they missed.

We were going to be married and our first child would be Rebecca Lynn Cassidy.

It was the tragedy of my life when his concert got cancelled. My 13th birthday was RUINED.

Ohhhh Shaun Cassidy. He still is a looker!

Jeez....my wife still has the hots for that guy, Andy Gibb and Scott Baio.

The Music? I still have all of my albums and a turntable. Haven't used it in over fifteen years. Guess it's just nostalgia. Stepson looks at me like I'm kinda cool/crazy. The Sex Pistols, Cheap Trick, The Clash, ZZ Top, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, Devo, etc...

It's weird describing life before the digital/information age.

We can't talk about music in the 70's without mentioning KISS! How about 8-track tapes? I still have a box of those! :0)

If you ever get a chance google 1 hit wonders of the 70's. So many songs I forgot about and I few I wanted to forget. For me though, the best fun is going into a club today and dancing to the YMCA. Some of the younger kids act like it's the coolest thing ever!

Shaun Cassidy - nah. I was in love with Parker Stevenson! Sigh! I recently found my box containing all my Tiger Beat head shots! :) What fun!

Music - I was raised on Steely Dan, Yes, Pink Floyd, Earth Wind & Fire, Chicago (yes, I have 2 older brothers with differing tastes). I still have all my albums plus some from my oldest brother. My other brother recently got rid of all his albums. I was devastated! He had some serious classics in his collection. I wish he would have asked me first. Oh well! I don't have the room anyway.

My husband is a big fan of KISS. We were in Myrtle Beach a couple of weeks ago and we just HAD to go to the KISS Coffeehouse there. :)

I was with you jannief. Everyone was in love with Shaun Cassidy, but I found Parker quite dreamy!

If I live to be 100,and I will, my only regret in life will be that I never got to see Queen live.

The music was unbeatable. My kids (early teens) and their friends even agree. Queen, yes! Joe Jackson!!! (saw him four times in concert) Adam Ant, Talking Heads, B-52 (although we may be slipping into the early 80s). And even disco. C'mon, nothing gets you going like a little KC and the Sunshine Band , ABBA, ELO or Earth, Wind, and Fire.

I think our generation was definitely the TV generation...we all grew up watching it AND watching the same things; Brady Bunch and Partridge Family on Friday nights and Schoolhouse Rock in between episodes of Scooby Doo and Land of the Lost on Saturday mornings.

While subsequent generations certainly do watch TV, the advent of cable means that they are watching different things...one may be watching Discovery Channel while another watched Nickelodeon. In many ways they don't have the shared cultural experience that we had.

Us forty-somethings are like the second child, though, in some ways. Our big brothers and sisters known as the "Baby Boomers" (those of us born pre-1964 are technically included, but honestly, culturally. we're different) and our kids brothers and sisters (Gen X, and now Gen Y) seem to take all the attention.

My all time favorite was Interjections. I LOVED that little song. We play the video in class sometimes and I sing it like I wrote the darn thing. It brings back so many memories and my class things it's brand new!

Did you know they are doing a live action version of Speed Racer? Looks kinda like they are trying to do a mix of live action and cartoon. Looks weird to me.

Yeah, I saw those previews when I went to see National Treasure. I know the graphics are way better but all I could think of was "Tron" when I saw it. Remember that movie? *snort* :)

I worked on "Tron"! It wasn't a very good movie, but it paved the was for films like "Sin City," "300," etc., and considering the technology when it was made, it was extremely ambitious.

I stuck my head in here for a laugh because I was a kid in the 70's... then I realized I'm gonna be a 40something in less than 5 months.

For me the 6os was a very exciting decade
to be listening to Music. You had the British
Invasion, Folk, R & B, the California Sound,
and so may other different sounds and
genres to chose from. However I also love
the 70s Music as well.

I'll have to second Librarianwannabe; the 60s were the most exciting period of social change and artistic development in the US since the Roaring 20s. Especially for someone hitting his teenage years in the 50s, as I did, the 60s really were the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

Talk about stuck in the 70's - I got home today and DH was listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I've been transported directly back to junior high.

Well seeing as I was also born right smack in the middle of the 60's I can't say I really remember much about the music. Music has to have an emotional pull for me. I was 10 yrs old in 75 and all of that music is engraved in my head. I do love the Beatles though. In fact, I can even say that my favorite song of all time is, Hey Jude. I associate it with a good feeling..from what I have no idea.

also used to catch The Midnight Special

had to be in bed at 7:30 on School

to sleep immediately just because I

also remember watching Dick Clark
on Saturday Afternoons and I also
liked to catch SOUL TRAIN every
once in awhile too. I can remember
listening to the Top 40 Tunes on my
AM Radio Station. I used to love to
watch THE MONKEES every Saturday
Afternoon. I am a huge fan of THE
MONKEES.

In fact the only time my Parents
ever let me stay up past my bedtime
curfew was to watch something
Educational on TV from PBS like
NOVA, or Monday Night Football
Games if my Favorite Teams the
Miami Dolphins or Dallas Cowboys
happened to be playing in the
game.

For the last few years I've been buying Rhino Records' Super Hits of the 70's compilation discs and the music channel I listen to on cable tv is, natch, the one dedicated to 70's music. My mom owned a fair number of albums and I remember listening, over and over, to Rumours/Fleetwood Mac, The Best of the Doobie Brothers, Hotel California/The Eagles, Brain Salad Surgery/Emerson, Lake & Palmer and the soundtrack to Hair, even (didn't really get many of the references, just thought the lyrics were funny).

Many of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons/shows have been mentioned already (I'd completely forgotten about Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, so that one really made me laugh. Another Sid and Marty Krofft show I watched was Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, if anyone remembers that one). Besides the shows already mentioned, with Speed Racer probably being my favorite, I really loved Ultraman; funny how I never noticed that big zipper running down the back of his body when I was a kid:) I also never missed an episode of The Six-Million Dollar Man and I'm waiting, rather less than patiently, for someone to release it on DVD in the U.S.

But, for me, the 70's were about Baseball (specifically, the Oakland A's with Jim "Catfish" Hunter, Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers, Gene Tenace, Bert "Campy" Campaneris, Reggie Jackson, the Alou brothers, Sal Bando, Joe Rudi and many others), martial arts, both as a sport and on film/tv (Bruce Lee, Kwai Chang Caine and Chuck Norris) and comic books (back when nobody, and I mean nobody, had any idea what you were talking about if you mentioned The X-Men); ah, those were the days.

Remember: And, But and Or...They'll get you pretty far.

Anyone remember "Free to Be You and Me"? There was a song but there was also a movie with Marlo Thomas. They used to show it a lot in school.

I so remember "Free to Be...", I enjoyed playing the album for the kids I babysat. Now I use the song "Parents are People" at my library storytimes. It brings me warm, fuzzy feelings!

We're going to see Van Halen Friday night. Yay us! With David Lee Roth singing lead. Ahhhh, can't wait to see the crowd and see how many are still wearing feathered hair. :)

The 70's were the pits. Disco sucked. I was the geeky kid who didn't fit in. My parents got divorced. The xmas without lights due to the oil embargo. Nixon. Malaise. Blech.

I wish so much that my high school years were not spent during the 70's! I should have been in the 60's - the Beatles, Motown, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, That Girl - now that's my decade! Instead, I got disco, platform shoes, Family, Charlie's Angels, the Sonny and Cher Show and Captain and Tenille! Some good things about the 70's - the Grateful Dead, Elton John (before he went over the top), Talking Heads, Elvis Costello and the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

My, my - such negativity for a light-hearted nostalgic topic. You can find something wrong with every decade if you really want to.

Disco didn't suck nor did Rock. Can't we all just get along? :) Whenever I hear a classic Disco song, I just feel the urge to boogie! And when I hear a good classic rock song - I want to swing my hair back and forth - a la "Wayne's World" and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Well, Van Halen got postponed - what a bummah! I don't know the reasons (we're predicting it's because Eddie and DLR are fighting again *snort*) - rumors are that it was equipment problems. They're supposed to reschedule. Sigh!

My daughter is now in 7th grade...I remember when I was in that same grade several girls and I made up a dance to "Saturday Night". And to this day when I hear that song my feet want to start moving in the pattern of our dance.

Y'all have mentioned so many of the 70's touchstones for me...ahhhhh. Thank you! Yes, Queen, Blondie, the Eagles (my first concert ever -1979), Supertramp, John Denver, Harry Chapin, Billy Joel (only the good die young & it's still rock & roll to me), BTO, Barry Manilow, KC & the Sunshine band. The music was fabulous from disco to folk to rock!

Did anyone ever watch The Kids from C.A.P.E.R.? It aired on NBC on Saturday mornings in 76-78 somewhere around noon, I think, Eastern time. Then there was American Bandstand when it was still going strong. If you stayed up late, there were always the Not Ready for Prime Time Players on SNL. Roseanne Roseannadanna was my favorite Gilda Radnor character. Other television highlights for me included Happy Days (Henry Winkler!), family ties (Michael J Fox!), Laverne & Shirley, 20/20, Barbara Walters being the first female national news co-anchor in '75.

So much to remember. Thank you, my fellow Baby-BUSTERS for sharing it! (Yes, I also agree that anyone born after 1959 isn't a baby-boomer - we're way too different)

I've seen Styx twice - back in their heyday so it was with Dennis DeYoung. You'll have to let us know how they sound without him. That's one reason why I've been hesitant to see them.

Also, how will Boston sound without Brad Delp?

Billy Joel, Springsteen, CSNY, SNL, Star Trek, The Rockford Files, The Monkees, MASH, All in the Family - they were all so great. I cringe at the rare times I look at my HS yearbook, though, the hair and clothing styles were terrible - yikes!

Styx is the band of bands for me. I won tickets to see them back in...nevermind. I was 13. Anyway, I have seen them through the years a few times and I will continue to see them as long as they have Tommy Shaw. Drool!
The Styx-Boston concert is my way in August...gonna try and get tickets to see them.

MDLady - I love Tommy Shaw too. I was just curious how they sounded though with the songs that were so obviously DeYoung singing - like Babe and Suite Madam Blue, etc. Did they get another singer that sounds like DeYoung? I know Journey managed to capture a couple of lead singers that sound a lot like Steve Perry so I still enjoy their concerts (they're coming around again I hear).

Styx, Journey and Foreigner - my favorite bands from the late 70's/early 80's.

I saw Styx once before on the Paradise Theater tour, forgot who was the opening act but they blew Styx away. I liked the earlier stuff, Grand Illusion and earlier.

Foreigner was supposed to have a concert where I work last year but it was rained out. :(

Let's not forget Kansas, another favorite of mine. Leftoverture was a classic.
And of course the motor city mad man Ted Nugent.

coppers comment about checking out high school yearbook photos reminded me of when I had my pictures taken for the yearbook. I still have the proof shots somewhere. I remember one photo was back far enough so you could see my comb sticking out of my back pocket. :)

So, how many of us kept our comb - or better yet the fold over comb/brush combo - in our back pockets? Needed to keep that feathered hair looking fresh!

my first concert was Kate Bush in 1979... my first glimps of political awareness in 1973, when president Allende of Chili was murdered... And all those horrible years at school, with kids who did not like me.

What a trip down memory lane!! Anyone remember Captain Kool & the Kongs? That was another Saturday morning fave of mine!!!

Hey does anyone remember the Saturday Morning Cartoon, The Groovy Ghoulies? They had Dracula, Wolfman, The Mummy, Creature From The Black Lagoon and others. I think it only lasted for two seasons but I used to watch it every week. Or how about The Banana Splits Show?

#70 - Scott Baio - HA HA I forgot about him (was he mentioned above I didn't notice?) :p My friends liked him as well as...get this....Leif Garrett!! Eeeeew! You guys remember him? I always thought he was icky. I remember he played Buddy's boyfriend on "Family". So, my friends and I had a cool deal going. When we would get our copies of Tiger Beat and whatever other teen magazines that were around, we'd trade. They'd give me pictures of Parker Stevenson and I'd give them pictures of Scott and Leif.

Okay - confession time. I still have my copy of Kristy & Jimmy McNichols' album. blushes

74 - What a way to become acquainted with rock, eh? I remember seeing Queen - singing Bohemian Rhapsody, no less one night. I recall thinking that Freddie Mercury's apparel was a bit too body-conscious...and boy howdy, did he strut.

Of course, Neil Sedaka was on & Barry Manilow another night - I had a good time as a night owl back when I was young!

Hey does anyone here remember Banana Seats and big Sissy Bars on the back of their bicycles? In fact I still have my Banana Seat from the 70s. I saved it hoping I would be able to put it on another bicycle. My Banana Seat has metallic silver with a yellow racing stripe and a big red reflecting light and a license plate that says 747 on the back. Everyone back then had Banana Seats and Sissy Bars on the back of their bicycles. I always wanted to have an English Racer bike but I never got one. Does anyone know if they still make English Racer bikes anymore?

I just thought of something else from my childhood, but it is actually from the year 1969-1970. Does anyone else remember the tv show "My World And Welcome To It" with William Windom?

I was never much into pop music (or music of any kind, really) and if the TV was on, chances are it was sports.

Growing up in NYC as the daughter of a Dodgers fan, I was a die-hard Mets fan.

1973 meant "You gotta believe" and Tug McGraw (whom I can link to because he wrote a baseball cartoon and a memoir--and I just added a little Common Knowledge).

I had a beat-up old baseball glove with a loose rivet, and tore a gash in my thigh slapping the glove against it like Tug used to do when he left the mound.

My only other vivid memory of the '70s was of the 1977 blackout in New York City. I'd rather remember the '73 Mets.

I remember those '73 Mets, I was into them too! Though I was a big Bud Harrelson fan - remember his fight with Pete Rose in the playoffs? I was so into watching the World Series - what teams! Reggie Jackson was on the A's then and Raleigh Fingers and Catfish Hunter. I didn't feel that way about baseball again until the '86 Mets!

Yea, I remember watching the '73 Series too. The A's were great back then winning the World Series for three consecutives years in a row from 1972 thru '74. Everyone knew the A's were loaded with talent. I remember hearing at the time the A's Owner wanted the Pitcher Vida Blue to change his name to Vida "True" Blue. Can you imagine that? And Finley also wanted Baseball to adopt using orange Baseballs during night games so the balls could be seen by the Players and wouldn't be lost in the Stadium lights when they were hit to the Outfield.

Of course, Vida Blue turned down his request to change his name. I still have a Baseball Souvenir from the '73 Series that has 1973 World Series stamped on it. It's not autographed or anything like that it was just a Souvenir you could order at the time. I also collect World Series Game Programs and even have a couple of Programs from All-Stars Games too.

I'm with MDLady I was born in 66 smack dab in the middle. I was only 9 in 75. I do however remember watching scooby doo, million dollar man, the bionic woman (ever wonder what would happen if they had ever decided to have kids?) I remember going to the girls club after school while my parents worked and a really sad song called "Seasons in the Sun" I don't remember who it was by though.

edit: I just remembered Elvis died in 1976. Very sad day!

# 83 -- Ok, sappy 70's music! That was my all-time favorite stuff back then. "Seasons in the Sun" was sung by Terry Jacks. I also loved "Run Joey Run" by David Geddes and "Chevy Van" by Sammy John. To this day I can still turn those songs on and be instantly transported back. Oh and what about "Afternoon Delight" by Starland Vocal Band??

#84 -- Sigmund was on the Sid & Mart Krofft Hour on Saturday mornings when Kaptain Kool and The Kongs were hosting. (See my earlier posts #67 & 70 as he was going to be my future husband.. lol)

Seasons in the Sun" was sung by Terry Jacks. I think he was a One Hit Wonder. After that song came out you never heard from him again. They played that song on the radio all the time. I love that song except it's real depressing if you listen carefully to the lyrics. I always found myself singing along to the song, though.

I'm new to this group and began to read some of the posts today. I'll "chime in" on 70's memories, in particular the music.

While I never considered myself a social activist during the 70's, I do remember having an aversion to the song In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry.

I was, and still am very good at listening to words and retaining them..drives my partner nuts...
The words of Mungo Jerry upset me because they seemed to be so nasty to those who were economically disadvantaged:

"If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal."
"If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel."

Wow, I never listened to those lyrics. Definitely puts a darker spin on the "light" summer song.

The ability to listen to words and remember them is both a curse and a blessing.

It's amazing I found this post since just this Friday I went to Disco themed retirement party. I dressed the part in a mini-skirt and paisley top with bell sleeves, along with the hoop earrings and scarf in my hair. Many of the people there were barely 20 years old. The music (which I totally looked forward to) was current pop-rap songs such as "I like big butts" YIKES. I was hoping to groove to Disco Inferno or Play That Funky Music.

As far as things I miss how about shag carpet, and mood rings. Remember Casey Kasum and the top 40? how about Don Kirshners Rock Concert? What about Creature Feature on TV and the series Love American Style (ooh that was taboo in my house. Had to watch it sitting on my knees with my hand on the TV channel changer listening for my Mom's footsteps, and when I heard them "quick like a bunny" switch to something acceptable like Donny and Marie or Carol Burnett) Another thing I wasn't allowed to watch was the movie Helter Skelter. How about books we weren't allowed to read? Mine were Go Ask Alice and The Wanderers. Naturally they made the rounds in school hidden away in our lockers.

As far as the posters, although David, Shaun and Parker were dreamy, I planned to marry Donny Osmond with Bobby Sherman a close second LOL

MdLady, It is possible we were the same person, I'll check with my ouji board. I agree that all my boyfriends named above aged well LOL. Although I haven't seen a recent pic of Bobby Sherman. I'm also thrilled with how both David C and Donny O have such wonderful personal lifes. Both have been married for eons and have what appears to be wonderful families. David Cassidy's children are in the "business" I hear doing well. His daughter is stunningly beautiful. Haven't heard much about Shaun or Parker (I think he was married to Kristie Alley at one point wasn't he?) You know who else I liked? Jamison Parker from Simon and Simon. He was a doll...

I had older sisters who were hippies and liked to sing, so I learned the lyrics to all of those political and social awareness songs, and was the only kid in Jr. high who knew "bottle o' wine, fruit o' the vine; when ya gonna let me get...sober?" and "Six Pence". My gosh, no wonder I was a social mess--it was my sisters' fault!

On a lighter note; I loved Land of the Lost, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, Speed Buggy, Scooby Doo, and Go-Go-Gophers, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and the show with the 'way-back machine'---I can't remember what that was...

Also loved SNL (my dad only put up with that for about 10 minutes each week, then we had to change the channel), The midnight Special, and Creature Feature. Also, The Incredible Mr. Limpett--wasn't that the show about the guy who turned into a fish??

My friend and I actually used to do our own version of the 'kick, drop, and roll' Starsky & Hutch entrance every time we went into the girls locker room together (she was Starsky, I was Hutch).

I also had posters of The Bay City Rollers and Donny Osmond. My brother threw darts at Donny.

And I LOVED my earth shoes; they were so comfy---I kinda wish I still had them....unlike my wooden platform shoes (ouch...)

Yea I remember all those great songs and tv shows too. I used to love to sing along with all of the songs, in fact I still do to this day. Even though my family says, I can't carry a tune in a bucket. But that's alright with me because I'm enjoying the music I love and grew up with. The cartoon you're talking about robbieg_422 is Peabody's Improbable History with Mr. Peabody a Genius of a talking dog with his pet boy, Sherman. Mr. Peabody and Sherman would always use the Wayback Machine to Time Travel in and at the end of the episode they would always say this corny pun but I loved it and always laughed because I thought it was so funny.

Mr Peabody and Sherman! I remember now...thanks beatles:). I have to admit, I never really outgrew cartoons. I've been known to watch Jane and the Dragon and Jacob Two-Two on a Saturday morning--but these days I love the artwork--they are beautifully done! I also like Veggie Tales because the writers are so....wierd.

MDLady and ljreader, did you guys like Luke Skywalker, too? I saw Star Wars again and again just for Luke Skywalker.

Robbieg - I had a big crush on Luke. Funny thing is he looked like the big brother of one of the neighborhood girls. She wasn't the most "popular" girl on the block and before Star Wars about 70% of the neighborhood had big 'ol crushes on him, but once Star Wars came out everybody wanted to be her best friend. He was the spitting image. They lived a few houses down from me and I could see him mowing the lawn on the weekends, and it actually looked like Luke himself landed one of his spaceships on Bayview Avenue in the Galaxy far away known as Wantaugh NY. LOL

I am exactly 40 and my high school days were in the early 80's....We sang our hearts out to Duran Duran and Journey, ate pop rocks, had feathered hair, wore pink Vans and mini skirts,had earrings with keys hanging off them, used tons of strawberry lip gloss, BFF for life written all over our SLAM books, lace gloves...."like a virgin....hey" Madonna was cool then..... oh and Devo...."Whip it good"

I wore those as a salesperson in Bloomingdales in Tysons Corner, VA. My manager was not thrilled; she felt the style was very unprofessional. But we sold the line in the store, so I was a walking advertisement for them.

At least two pairs of pants ended up being torn up and used as pull-toys for my dog.

Grew up during the '70s. If it wasn't for the rock music, I wouldn't miss that period at all. The clothes, the hair, the attitudes ... none of it.

#103 - Boy do I remember the early to mid eighties when the New Wave and Punk/Grunge were just starting to come about. Safety pins in your clothes anyone? Old army wear worn as clothing? Funny thing that - times have definitely changed, I was in a thrift store with my son and there was a great vintage army jacket that would fit him. When I asked if he wanted it, he told me that he would feel bad to wear army clothing when not a soldier. I remember when we did it as fashion.

Leg warmers? Flashdance? Footloose? Maybe we should start an eighties thread for those born in the late sixties and early seventies.

107: They were playing "Hot Stuff" on the radio yesterday and my boyfriend who is 51 didn't know it... I said come on you were in your 20s in the 70s but he said he didn't listen to disco then. Sigh.
