Has anyone taken the CSLA course for church librarians? I notice on the website that it can be taken as a CEU or for actual seminary credit. The price seems a little stiff--$200 plus $50 for books.

I also noticed on the NCLA they have a new book for church librarians, a 2006 edition. Has anyone purchased that?

I'm just getting into the process of being our church librarian, and I would love some info either on the CSLA course (which I'm considering taking), or some kind of handbook. The ones I'm finding on Amazon are from 1998. There has to be something more current than that!

Any thoughts on resources to get a new librarian started?

Look at the listings on the CSLA website. Most of their publications are not available through Amazon.

The LINC-L church library listserv posted a question on Oct. 1, 2009, about the CSLA course and received several responses. One person who has recently completed the course spoke very highly of it and gave quite a detailed description of what it covered and how she benefited from it. I'm just getting my church to pay for this now and I'm going to do the non-credit online course, hopefully starting next week. I definitely need the education (I'm a little at a loss as to where to begin), and i'm looking forward to getting the texts to help me!

I can second the recommendation about the excellent publications of CSLA. Although the yearly national meeting can be quite expensive, there are many local chapters that have excellent "how to" programs at meetings. Check to see if there is a group within a few hours of your location.
