I came across “trumpery” while reading the novel What’s Bred in the Bone by Robertson Davies (published in 1985) and just had to look it up. Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary (11th edition) has as its first definition “worthless nonsense.”
I’m working up a review of that novel to post here at LT that pretty much begins with mention of this surprising word.
