I think I remember reading this when I was a kid - 1980s maybe. My daughter read it in the last five years. She remembers it having a purple cover. Oddly enough, both of us, when trying to find it, ended up with "The Door in the Wall" (which is not it).
A boy (from outer space?) falls out of a hole, is taken in by a couple or a family. He can't talk at first but learns English because he can see into their minds. There is a minor theft involved (?), a piece of jewelry (to help him locate his 'pick-up' location?).
Eventually he is able, with the help of the family? a child? to find his pick-up location and returns to his people (from another planet?).
As you can see, our memories are rather incomplete, but we would love to read this book again, if anyone knows it. Thank you!!
