So my memory of the book is very foggy. I believe the story starts off with a guy either broken down on the side of the road or a car addict? I think it's raining and somehow he ends up from that scene to a different universe. I think he's trying to get to some city by following a road. I think there are souls around or tortured spirits? The book has a dark theme to it. Almost feels a little religious. I'm sorry. These aren't the best details because I read it when I was very young and gave up on the book. Pleas help!

One of the Chronicles of Amber books by Robert Zelazny?
The wikipedia article has good short synopses and a general gist, but they do feel very religious at times, and get dark in places. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Amber
(I read them all in unjacketed hardcover editions, so I have NO clue about cover art tho.)

How long ago was it when you read the book?
If you were 'very young', was it a YA or children's book, or was it written for adults?

If it's for adults, maybe Lord Foul's Bane? He's not in a broken down car, but it's being hit by a car in the street that sends him to the other world, and the rest of it fits. (I think, anyway. I gave up on it too.)

I found the book. It's called Edge of Eternity by Randy Alcorn. Thanks everyone!
