Deaths in February - 2018

Journalist Nicholas von Hoffman died February 1 at the age of 88. His books include Citizen Cohn, We Are the People Our Parents Warned us Against and Trout Fishing in the Reflecting Pool or the Fireside Watergate.

Billionaire philanthropist Jon Huntsman Sr. died February 2 at the age of 80. His books include Winners Never Cheat: Even in Difficult Times, New and Expanded Edition and
Barefoot to Billionaire: Reflections on a Life's Work.

Esmond Bradley Martin, American wildlife expert who fought the trade in illicit animal parts, was murdered in his Nairobi home on February 4. He was 72. His books include Run Rhino Run and Cargoes of the East: Ports, Trade, and Culture of the Arabian Seas and Western Indian Ocean.

Physicist Joseph Polchinski, who theorized about multiple universes, died on February 2 at the age of 63. He wrote several volumns on String Theory.

Proponent of an open internet, John Perry Barlow died February 2 at the age of 70. He contributed to Content: Selected Essays on Technology, Creativity, copyright, and the future of the future.

Drummer for Dylan and later an actor, Mickey Jones died February 7 at the age of 76. His memoir was called That Would Be Me: Rock & Roll Survivor to Hollywood Actor.

Mickey Jones, oh no! He was the Hawks' drummer on Dylan's iconic 'Albert Hall Concert' in 1966. Also he was the drummer in Kenny Roger's First Edition and played on 'Just Dropped In to See What Condition My Condition Was In', so every time you light up and re-watch The Big Lebowski that's Mickey you're hearing.

And John Perry Barlow, internet dude though he was, is more famous in some quarters for being the lyricist on a dozen or two Grateful Dead songs co-written with Bob Weir or Brent Mydland. So if there's a Dead lyrics book out there, he's probably a co-author. ETA And he's now been confirmed as a contributor to The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics.

NPR ran an old interview with him yesterday. He had a wonderful voice. He was also a cattle rancher for 40 years. Sounds like an eclectic fellow. eta Barlow that is.

Former Dodger baseball star Wally Moon died February 9 at the age of 87. His memoir was called Moon Shots: Reflections on a Baseball Life.

Singer Vic Damone died February 11 at the age of 89. His autobiography was called Singing Was the Easy Part.

Former executive with the World Zionist Organization, Sam E. Bloch died February 4 at the age of 93. He wrote From Holocaust to Redemption.

Former Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers died February 14 at the age of 78. His books include Revitalizing Liberal Values in a Globalizing World and Inspiration for Global Governance.

Famed rock climber Jim Bridwell died February 16 at the age of 73. He wrote Climbing Adventures: A Climber's Passion.

Historian and editor Lerone Bennett, Jr. died February at the age of 89. A few of his books include Before the Mayflower: A History of Black America and
What Manner of Man: A Biography of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Health Economist Alan Maynard died February 2 at the age of 73. His books include Non-Random Reflections and The Physician Workforce in the United Kingdom.

The Rev. Billy Graham died February 21 at the age of 99. His many books include Angels: God’s secret Agents and Just as I Am.

Danish dancer Nini Theilade died February 13 at the age of 102. She wrote Dansen var det hele vaerd.

Clean water advocate David Zwick died February 5 at the age of 75. He wrote Water Wasteland: Ralph Nader's Study Group on Water Pollution.

Douglas Botting, explorer, died February 6th 2018 aged 83. He wrote In the Ruins of the Reich and co-wrote Nazi Gold among over 20 others.

Journalist Edward Pearce died February 9 at the age of 78. His books include Reform! The Fight for the 1832 Reform Act and The Great Man; Sir Robert Walpole.

Disgraced Buddhist leader Eido Tai Shimano died February 18 at the age of 85. His books include Golden Wind: Zen Talks, Zen Word, Zen Calligraphy and Points of Departure: Zen Buddhism with a Rinzai View.

Humourist Michael Green died February 25th 2018 aged 91. He wrote several books including The Art of Coarse Acting, The Art of Coarse Drinking, The Art of Coarse Rugby and Don't Print My Name Upside Down.
Just to add a bit of fun the TMS (diary) section of The Times says he defined a coarse golfer as someone who shouts "FORE" before putting, and a coarse sailor as a man who in an emergency forgets nautical jargon and shouts "For God's sake, turn left".

Shakespeare scholar and college professor Homer D. Swander died February 15 at the age of 93. His publications include Man and the Gods: Three Tragedies and Franz Kafka Today.

Author Cynthia Heimel died February 25 at the age of 70. Her books include Sex Tips for Girls and If You Can’t Live Without Me, Why Aren’t You Dead Yet?.

Heart specialist Dr. Arthur J. Moss died February 14 at the age of 86. His books include Heart Disease in Infants Children and Adolescents and Antiarrythmic Agents.

Architect Ivor Smith died February 18 at the age of 92. He wrote Architecture an Inspiration.

Vanessa Lafaye, author of Summertime and At First Light died on 28 February at the age of 54 or 55.
