I'm sure this has been suggested before. Nevertheless, I wish to throw my vote in for this feature.
It'd be nice if concept of a "work" were refined beyond what's between the covers of a given book. Often, novels or other books that were previously published separately are combined into omnibus or collected editions.
It would be nice to be able to indicate that a particular book "contains" several "works". The reverse relationship, "contained-in" may also be useful. This mechanism would complement and sometimes provide an alternative to the existing combine/separate works mechanism.
Thanks to all the LT staff for their great work.

This isn't a fix, but the new series section in Common Knowledge can be used to indicate omnibus works. :)
Tim has talked about adding a contains/contained-in feature, which would require either database changes or perhaps more Common Knowledge sections.

Series connects several Works together, while what is needed for the Contains feature is to say that a particular Edition (Book) contains certain works. So it's a Edition to Work relationship that I don't think can be done using Common Knowledge.

But a field could be added that would link to particular works, the same way as series does...

Would adding a Common Knowledge field alter the statistics of how many people own the same work? The Iliad and the Odyssey in relation to the joint volumes The Iliad and The Odyssey are a good example. Would recommendations work as expected?
