Does anybody have experience with the Dominicans? After writing my book on the subject, I am interested to hear the experience of others.

I have a small experience with a former Roman Catholic Dominican who became an Episcopal priest. He was an excellent preacher. Some of hia sermons were collected into a book, Holy Apostles Sermons, by Peter Carey. He was also a good pastor. He functions as an adjunct in retirement.

I have known some Dominicans. One who made a real impression on me was Albert Nolan. I really liked his books Jesus before Christianity and Jesus Today: A Spirituality of Radical Freedom. Not sure whether one would call him a liberation theologian as such, but his thinking is certainly informed by the anti-apartheid liberation struggle. Another was Miriam MacGillis, the founder of Genesis Farm, a creation spirituality centre in rural New Jersey, USA. I spent six weeks there a quarter of a century ago sleeping in a teepee and getting up at 5 am to harvest the organic vegetables. I believe Genesis Farm is still going strong.

I knew, slightly, Father Gilbert Hartke. He was the founder and for years the head of the famous drama department at Catholic University in Washington DC. Here is a biography of him: Father Hartke: His Life and Legacy to the American Theater.

I am one, and have been for 25 years. Have also been director of the best US Dominican research library (in Washington DC).
