A book and a movie, I think. The plot concerns an affair involving the wife of a storekeeper (the man is perhaps a police officer). The actual storekeeper becomes so paranoid that HE BUILDS A GLASS FLOOR IN HIS BEDROOM WITH THE BED IN THE MIDDLE!). Weird I know, but that's all I can remember, sorry. Please help! Thanks.

Paris Trout by Peter Dexter fits the bill. A movie was made of this novel. The affair, if I remember correctly, is with an attorney who is defending the shopkeeper, Paris Trout, against of a charge of murder. Paris installs a glass floor in his bedroom partway through the story.
