I read this book while in high school (1989-1993). It's a historical romance novel based in England/Ireland/Scotland pre-1600's. I believe that at the beginning of the book a young woman and her sister(s) are outside when visitors arrive. Their father promises their hands in marriage. The main male character is a lord or chieftain and has many illegitimate children and mistresses. The female character falls in love with her husband and works to make him fall in love with her. At one point she sets fire to the husbands bed, possibly with him and a mistress in it. The couple may have also been locked in a room together but I could be remembering that from a different book.

Try: The Taming by Jude Deveraux
Don't remember the sisters outside at the beginning, but everything else seems to fit. Mistresses, illegitimate children, setting mattress on fire, locked in room together. I love this book. (Sorry, I don't know how to link books yet.)

Thank you! I must be mixing two books up into one because I've read The Taming twice already and I'm getting ready to read it again lol. Since I only seem to remember the first part of the book, I may never figure it out.

Outside castle walls or inside castle yard? The fact that there is more than one daughter being given away is actually something someone might remember.
ONLY one I can think of off the top of my head with two daughters being given at same time, but by king's decree not father's is : THE BRIDE BY JULIE GARWOOD. Both girls also were outside at the time the visitors arrived. Another of my favorites.
