Would it be possible to add a "more space" function to the Tag field of the edit details page so that the text area can expand like it can for reviews, comments, etc.?

What would be even better is delic.io.us style tagging, where the popular tags for a book appear and I just have to click to add those tags to my personal tags.

Also, it would be great to have the tagging feature available with adding new books to my shelf.

Thanks for a great site!
Roger

>2 adrenalinewerks:
You can already tag while adding books. There's a field for tags called "Tags to add" below the search box on the Add Books page.

I disagree about the popular tag selection. At least, it's not something I would ever use.

I would like to see del.icio.us-style tag bundling.

Of course everyone has their preferences, but in this thread i was asking for more space in the text field. The tag issue has been debated elsewhere, numerous times.

The tag field is still woefully inadequate for people who use a lot of tags.

6> Agreed. I vaguely recall seeing the thread where it was changed, I think to make it easier for those adding tags whilethey add the book.
The downside is that it makes it harder for those who add the bulk of their tags through the edit mode....

Yes it would be nice if the edit page would get the text area back...

This is an issue where I like both versions of the tag field. The old field type was nice for visibility, but the new field type remembers what I had typed for the previous book in the series.

The list view has the power of both of these characteristics, and I used to do almost all of my tagging there. If the edit page field type goes back to the memo-style field, I'll probably return to mostly tagging on list view.

bump for more tag space

I'd like to toss in a vote for more tag space - especially since my auto-fill has a few commonly-used tag groups that get cutoff and make me go to the main edit screen anyway since I really can't easily see what I'm grabbing.

me too. Not being able to see all the tags when I edit them makes it very cumbersome.

Ideally I'd prefer to do _all_ my changes in the edit mode - not have to toggle and do 'some' changes via catalogue and 'other' changes using edit mode... But the current tag editing field (in edit mode) is just so small.

So, the big drawback of turning it from a one-line into a multi- or potentially multi-liner is that, in most browser, if you hit return in a single-line form, it submits it, but if you hit return in a multi-line form, it inserts a return. I very much like being able to edit and hit return to save...

Hitting enter does nothing for me on the edit page in FF/Vista.

If you're in a single-line input box?

16DaynaRT

None of the single line fields on the edit page react to my enter key.

Interesting. I thought that was pretty standard across browsers. ANyone else?

Nothing in IE7 either.

>17 timspalding: Do you mean from the add books page or from the works page?

From the add books page, using quick edit, hitting enter does save tags. (FF/XP)

From the work page, hitting enter does not save tags, I need to hit save.

But I'd like more space under quick edit. :)

Sheesh. Am I insane? Is this just a Mac feature the PC never aped? How would I get anything done if I needed to use the mouse to submit forms?

21DaynaRT

I can use the enter key for CK fields and other forms around the interwebs, but not the edit page.

On my PC at work, hitting enter in the search page fields does nothing (XP/IE6), but on my iMac at home (OSX/Safari) hitting enter submits the query. Really annoying, since I have strong habits from many other websites (even on the PC) that enter submits the query. So no, it's not that it's a Mac feature; on other websites it works.

22> That's a coding issue, methinks. The search fields on all other LT pages (home page, add books, my library, etc.) all trigger the Search button when ENTER is pressed. The fields on the Search page do not do this; you have to tab over or use the mouse. The more I think about it, I bet it has to do with the multiple search forms on that page; perhaps the browser doesn't know which Search button to trigger when ENTER is pressed? On all other pages, there's only one Search button.

(I'm talking IE6 and 7, here.)

And, yeah, pressing ENTER doesn't do anything on the Edit Page. (Except add a new line on multi-line input fields.) You have to click the green "Save" button to save anything. (It does work as you describe on the single-line CK fields, though.)

But doesn't that seem a bit...inconsistent, interface-wise? To have some fields save with a keystroke, and others save only with a mouse-click?

I take back what I said in #21. I can't get the enter key to work with CK fields in FF 3. It works fine on the search page.

Sometimes it works in CK for me, sometimes it doesn't. Just now it didn't work on an author's date of death, but did on places of residence. On a work it just worked on People/Characters. Didn't work on another date of death. Worked on Blurbers a few times. Is it just a coincidence that it's worked on multi-row fields and not on others? (Firefox 3.0.4, WinXP)

27timspalding
Nov 26, 2008, 9:23 pm

"It works" meaning that enter causes submit?

28r.orrison
Nov 27, 2008, 2:40 am

I wouldn't think that it should do form submit, since I may have multiple CK fields in the edit state. It should do the equivalent of hitting Save for the field that currently has focus.

If you're got time to look at this (?!?!!) you could also look at the behavior of the Tab key in multi-row CK fields. I would expect it to move me to the next field, and from the last field to the + button, but instead focus moves to the next field which is completely selected, and then it moves on to the field after that at the end of the text. Shift-Tab which should move to the previous field does so, but then moves back to the original field.

While I've got your attention - Thank you!!! for all the work you and the rest of the staff do on LibraryThing.

I'm going to ask about more space on the edit page for tags again, because editing tags from the catalog view now ERASES my start/finish reading dates.

Found a workaround for this problem by installing the Textarea & Input Resize script for Greasemonkey http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/57786

I'm bumping this because I just experienced the problem and it's driving me crazy . . . I really thought there was more room in tags on the edit page . . . but maybe not? . . . in any case the argument above about being able to "submit" seems odd . . . pretty sure you have to click on "save" everywhere on the book edit page (hitting enter doesn't do anything for me in the tag field) . . . Can someone explain why we can only have one long line of tags on that page but in other places it's a text box?
