This edition is in a sort of a way in a series with `The woman in black` even though it will most likely look a lot different, it has a slipcase, and are larger than the former, to name some

Apparently the CP edition has been delayed until march 2019 (so it seems like)

Any thoughts on this volume? .. i must admit i am a little underwelmed with the illustrations, as to haunted stories i much prefer haunted photos, moody paintings etc (sometimes less is more) .. this edition has a kind of cartoony feel to it

: I am of course open to let them grow on me, if i am to have this volume that is

Anyone able to explain why this has such a high price tag? I find Centipede pricing confusing sometimes. Why was a book like A Mountain Walked only $150 but this will be $595?

According to the May 2018 newsletter, the book is supposed to have the following features:

"...a new introduction by Caitlín Kiernan, new artwork by Matt Mahurin, and an oversize design printed on mouldmade paper..."

Centipede recently published a book by Kiernan and I suspect that there was a larger contract covering all activities between the two, so guessing at the relative cost of the introduction would be difficult/pointless. With that in mind, it's still probable that the newly commissioned artwork represents the biggest expense. Of course, fancy paper and and oversized format aren't helping keep the price down, either.

I just read the book last year and really enjoyed it, but I struggle to imagine any combination of materials and features that would prompt me to pay $595 for it, especially since I already have a decently made Easton Press copy and it's a pretty short read. However, I don't doubt that Centipede will make a fantastic production of it.

Also of note, for those who don't receive the Centipede newsletter, Jerad is planning to publish Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle, as well. It must have just gone out of copyright or something because Easton Press just published a version of it last year.

Publication now put back to Halloween. Appropriate but, given the delays so far, entirely unreliable. By the time it comes out I may have lost interest especially at the proposed price point + delivery to UK. Sigh...

Bump!

(That was irony, as there are not many stages on this site to bump up from to begin with)

If it`s up for orders this month, are anybody in on it?

Eh at almost $600, that will probably be a pass for me, especially given the illustrations aren't exactly blowing me away.

Same with me, on the illustration bit. Still looking for the ultimate hill house edition .. I want it so badly to be this .. , but ...

The price is now above $600. From today's newsletter:

The Haunting of Hill House will be up for order next weekend. The price will be $625 per copy. This is an oversize book, printed in two colors and four colors throughout, with several full-page, full-color illustrations tipped into the book. It is signed by Matt Mahurin and Caitlín R. Kiernan. It has a new introduction by Caitlín Kiernan, and a reprint of a classic Stephen King essay from Danse Macabre, plus an afterword by Laurence Hyman. It comes with a handsome cloth binding, dustjacket with art by Mahurin, and the whole is enclosed in a cloth slipcase. The dustjacket has already been wrapped in Mylar for you, which means the slipcase is designed for this. The slipcase has a 3D lenticular image on the cover. There are other nice touches as well. With luck, the title will be shipping near end of January.

I’ve been up and down on this one since I first spotted it on the web page oh so long ago. The size is a bit much at 13 inches which might be more with a slipcase. The illustrations do not get my pulse racing. And the price...? I’ll decide when it’s finally up for sale and see if there is more information available especially regarding the illustrations.

Anyone purchase this? I feel that the Suntup edition took out much of this edition's thunder. Also, it was delayed so long and at $635 it's one of the more expensive CP books of all time - for 256 pages.

I had previously decided to pass it, but my resolution has dissolved. It looks like a phenomenal edition to me. I think that I will order it.

Jerad was tempting me yesterday, and I'm still really thinking about it. While I prefer We Have Always Lived in the Castle, this just looks like a phenomenal production, and I think I'm gonna kick myself for missing out on it. But then, $635 can buy a lot of other CP titles in the new year...

The size of the book doesn’t suit my bookshelves but it was the price + UK delivery ($125) that settled it for me. Looks like I’ll be reading a paperback edition after all. I note that postage in the US is included in the price.

I really want to support Centipede but the combination of this price point and my dislike of the few illustrations I've seen (e.g., the portrait coming alive one really bothers me, and not in a good "it belongs in a horror novel" way) are keeping me from pulling the trigger. The Shirley Jackson original drawings sound interesting, though. How hard are those to find?

Considering the limitation of 250 copies, this should remain a fairly rare item and when it appears on the secondhand market, I expect it will always be priced pretty high, probably always higher than the original $635, too. That might make it a safe gamble for those with a fear of missing out and can afford to shelve $635 until they truly decide whether or not to keep it or sell it.

> agree, I also want to support Centipede press and have about 30 titles but the cost of this volume has crossed a line for me. The price of postage alone to the UK is not far off the cost of the last volume I bought - which was considered to be a companion volume in style: The Woman in Black (with the superb Reggie Oliver illustrations).
I dread to think at what price point Dune will be.

Not trying to convince anybody or to push in any way, but it seems that the book is now available for pre-order at http://www.centipedepress.com/horror/hauntingofhillhouse.html
Also, there are some new samples of page spreads at the bottom of the webpage, which to me personally look actually nice.

As I said, I did not want to encourage or to push anybody, but I just wanted to let everyone know that the book is open for pre-order. It is possible that in spite of very high price, the book might sell out very quickly, so I wanted everyone to have a chance, if interested.
I did buy it myself...

One thing I've learned along with my love for fine and private press books is a constrained patience. I'm into CP for both the Elric and the Fritz Leiber books and my wallet is happy for Jerad to take his sweet time as long as the series eventually get finished. Ditto my Barbarian Press "commitments". It's also a bit of a relief when they don't produce too many "must haves"; which this book is not for me. Because my patience goes to hell in a website cart if it's an edition I can't wait to read or some other factor is trying that delicate patience. Like the Mad Parrot Pres Wind in the Willows; luckily(?) for me way out of my financial league these days but which causes an occasional fantasy of leveraging my first-born (she's a book lover too, so she would understand)...

This book was 'in the works' for a long time and hence Jerad would have amassed a long waiting list (including me). So, not surprised it was sold out quickly. I really loved the illustration!

I have read the Haunting of the Hill House in CP edition - my very first time reading the novel, and I must say that the design of the book and the illustrations worked very well for me. I feel that the color illustrations and the little black-and-white miniatures at the beginning of each chapter fit the work well, and, in my case, contributed to the overall enjoyable experience of reading the novel. I read all additional materials, too, and I am very happy with the edition.

Centipede Press still has some unsigned copies available for a cheaper price; however, they are still expensive...
