I read this book in high school, I believe, so that would be in the mid to late 80s. I think this book was fairly new at that time. The main character spends most of the novel inside a mecha suit, sporadically battling mysterious aliens. at one point he visits an alien factory of some sort. The factory machines are powered by human limbs, arms and legs (without bodies, or even hands/feet iirc) that endlessly pump the machines, powering them.
I seem to recall a scene near the end involving hard radiation from a nearby star, maybe a pulsar or black hole. It's a very bleak novel, and I thing the MC may die at the end.
