Chelle tries to ROOT for the first time

Hello! I am Chelle and I have been a member of LT since 2011. You can normally find me hanging out in the 75 Books group. I just discovered this group and think it's a great idea! I have made a goal of reading from my unread shelf this year and I think this group will help that!

To make it even harder on myself (cause why not!) I am not including audiobooks or ebooks that I have. I plan to only add dead wood books that are physically taking up space on my shelves.

I think I have about 75 to choose from and I would like to reduce that number by at least 30 this year!

Happy reading, everyone!

These are my TBR shelves

1) The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs (owned since 2018)

Hi Chelle, it’s good to find a familiar face in the new (to us) Group. You’re a better woman than me...I will include ebooks in my choices because they are my most ignored books. Those other sassy ones are in plain sight taunting me while the ebooks might as well be buried deep in the earth. Good luck to you my friend.

Thank you for the welcome, everyone! I am working on my first book from my shelves The Friday Night Knitting Club and I'm really enjoying it! This is one I probably won't keep and plan on passing on to a friend at work to help with one of her reading challenges. I also plan on using this one for my Pop Sugar Challenge for the hobby prompt.

>2 Jackie_K: Thank you, Jackie!

>3 connie53: Thank you, Connie! I've had those Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben sitting there for quite a while!

>4 FAMeulstee: Hiya, Anita! Happy ROOTing!

>5 rabbitprincess: Thank you, rabbitprincess! Good luck with your challenge

>6 Donna828: Happy to see you here, Donna! I have over 300 ebooks sitting there but they don't make me as sad at the stack of real books that have been there for years! Maybe if I can knock off most of these then I'll do an ebook ROOT next year! The only problem is I can't use my ereader at work and I'm not a big fan of having multiple books on the go

>7 cyderry: Thanks, Cheli! I think this is really going to help!

>8 MissWatson: Thanks, MissWatson!

1) The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge: #08 - A book about a hobby

I don't usually read what some people would call "chick lit" but the blurb on this one sounded interesting. It sat on my shelf for almost a year before I finally picked it up and I'm glad that I did. I loved the characters and the story and it almost made me cry towards the end. (almost!) I doubt I will read the next two in the series as I think this probably should have been a stand alone novel.

Hi Chelle!

Congrats on joining the ROOTs group - this is my fourth year in the group and I love having my two threads, here and in the 75 Books group.

My goal is 100 books, of which I want 45 to be ROOTs. Of course with me, finishing a book does not necessarily mean that it leaves the house, but at least I'm reading stuff off my shelves.

Good luck!

2) A Red Herring Without Mustard by Alan Bradley
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge: #30 a book featuring an amateur detective

Flavia is quite the little character. She is very brave and very foolish! I had a very hard time getting into this one and I have picked it up and put it down multiple times since I bought it in 2011! I have even tried it on audio instead of print. I was determined to get it off my TBR shelf this year for my ROOT challenge so I stuck through the beginning and it ended up being a very enjoyable read. I wouldn't call it a cozy mystery (too much death) but it is close. I have the next in the series and I'm going to jump right into it while I am on a roll!

3) I am Half-Sick of Shadows by Alan Bradley
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge: #31 a book about a family

Now that I am into the Flavia stories she has really grown on me. She is always poking her nose into things that a child should not be and she tends to find things that the adults have overlooked. I plan to continue this series now!

>13 karenmarie: Thanks, Karen! Not all of my 30 will leave the house, but probably quite a few of them. I've been running out of space and tend to collect my faves and purge some of the ones I didn't enjoy as much.

4) Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea by Nancy Atherton
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge (On shelf since 2016)

I love The Aunt Dimity books. They are cozy mysteries with only a slight amount of thriller to them. I have been working my way through these for many years and I usually reserve them for times when I need something light (either summer reads or after finishing a great book). This was book 11 and I plan on purchasing the next one later this year.

5) The Queen of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge:09 - A book you meant to read in 2018

I read the first book in early 2018 and really enjoyed it and for some reason didn't pick up the second book right away. As always when I do that I forgot what I had read in the first book so it took a bit to get into this second instalment. Once I got into it I really liked both Queens and Gen, for very different reasons. I have picked up the third book right away and hopefully will buy more from this series this year.

6) The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge

I wish I had the next book in this series so I could start it right away. I am adoring the main characters and hope that continues in the next books.

7) Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge: 02 - A book that makes you nostalgic

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I picked this one up as I just knew it was very popular and often I don't enjoy the most popular books. I ended up loving it and read it in about a day. I loved the little references to 90's pop culture as that is when I was in high school.

Hi and Welcome! You are organized! My TBR books are just all over the place at my house, although some are in a pile on my dining room table.

>20 LadyoftheLodge: Thanks, I try and keep the books in one place or else my non-reader husband gets a little annoyed :)

8) An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Women's Prize for Fiction 2019 Longlist
Pop Sugar Challenge: 28 - a book recommended by a celebrity you admire (Opera's Book Club)

I wasn't sure, originally, if I was going to be able to read it as it had two strikes against it in the first few pages. I found it very annoying that the pages were rough cut and uneven and the first few pages were full of clichés. I put it down for a few days and picked it up as an ebook instead and that made quite a difference. I was at 16% after putting the kids to bed and ended up staying up until 1am to finish it! It's not often anymore that I will risk being exhausted when the kids wake me up!

9) Seven for a Secret by Lyndsay Faye
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge
Pop Sugar Challenge: 4 - Read a book during the season it is set in (winter)

I really adore the main character of this series, Timothy Wilde. He is a copper star (police officer) in the newly created New York police force and he is good at it, although he has a tendency to get himself into some sticky situations.

I adore this series and I hope she writes more!

(imagine link not working ... I'll come back later and try again)

11) I Found You by Lisa Jewell
75 Books Challenge
ROOT challenge

I ended up giving this one 4.5 stars as I was surprised at the ending and impressed that I hadn't guessed the outcome. I love when an author isn't predictable and surprises me. This was my first by Jewell and I'll keep an eye out for more.
