I've been searching YEARS for this one. The plot is this:
Son's father was a sailor, I believe, and his mom kept the porch light on for him even after everyone believed he had died.
Mom says she'll get a pet the day something rhymes with orange. One day a (one eyed?!) Parrot shows up and she calls him L'orange and keeps him.
One of the kids teachers disappears.
Parrot eventually takes him and flies him? To a new planet and it's where no one sleeps, sleep is a crime. He's running around trying to do it secretly. He comes across his old teacher (Mr Pye?) And he's like a sideshow attraction for the people there; he's in a cage and they feed him candy bars which the kid knows he hates... he likes m&ms because they don't melt in your pocket. The rest of the book deals with him trying to escape back to his own world/reality/whatever.
Anyone know anything???
