From what I can remember of the book (series?), it started with kids entering a school for the first day of class or something, only for the doors to lock and all the teachers to die, leaving the kids sealed in. Don't remember if it was for safety, or an experiment, or if the were exposed to something and not allowed to leave (might be that last one?), but a Lord of the Flies type situation occurred where a brutal pecking order formed.
