In the waning days of Chris Adamson's Books and Vines website I began a series of articles entitled "The Great Illustrated Private Press Books." The intent was twofold:

1. To bring the private press books representing the pinnacle of the modern private press movement into the homes of B&V readers who could otherwise not afford or not obtain these seminal works.

2. To provide a frame of reference for B&V readers and book collectors for evaluating and judging the quality of private press books in a much lower price range. By recognizing what the finest 20th private press books looked like, one would then be able to recognize these same qualities in other less expensive books and develop increasing confidence in selecting books for one's collection.

Seven books and articles were written and posted on B&V, each with a complete set of detailed photos. And remember: by left-clicking over most photos on B&V they will enlarge. Left-clicking a second time over the enlarged photo will magnify the photo further, providing a macro photo equivalent. This becomes quite useful in fully appreciating the qualitiy of the various handmade papers, the typography, and the quality of the letterpress and handpress printing.
