I have in our collection a small book titled With the River Hogs that was printed and published at the Gardyloo Press in Wisconsin.

John Thomas Bennett operated his private press, the Gardyloo Press, in Madison, Wisconsin, in the 1970s and 1980s. After receiving his Master of Fine Arts degree (MFA) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, John became director of the University’s Silver Buckle Press, a working museum of letterpress printing history, and a lecturer in UW's department of art. Later, John became an assistant professor of art at Oregon State University teaching graphic design, typography, and letterpress printing. He also issued several books under the Gardyloo Press imprint while in Oregon. He currently lives in St.Louis, Missouri, where he works as a digital book designer/printer. He has an 1847 Albion handpress and a Heidelberg Windmill upon which he produces letterpress books for his clients as well as offset equipment.

His output was quirky, as befits a private press. I have not been able to find a checklist of his publications, so have little to go on, really. A list of the titles I have been able to find is given below. The Press is represented in several institutional library collections, including the University of Iowa, University of Wisconsin, Library of Congress, Newberry Library, and the British Library (St. Pancras) .

KNOWN PUBLICATIONS:

in Wisconsin

With the River Hogs by Fred Willard Bennett. 1978.
Illustrated below.

Cabbages: Just Another Look. 1979. Limited to 50 copies. Small 8vo. 27 pp. Illustrated with color lino cuts on paper of varying sizes with short accompanying text telling the story of bring the cabbage from the store to the table. Brown wrappers with lettering to front cover. Fine condition.

From the colophon: The lino cuts accurately describe an activity that has become common-place in the artist’s life. He spent happy hours putting this book together out of paper scraps that just happened to be around the shop.

Several copies of this are currently available on line.

In the Apartment by Jim Lee. 1979.

Hats and Glasses: Two Essays by Arthur Hove. 1981.

WITH THE RIVER HOGS

Front cover. The title is printed in blind, and, I think, not very successfully.

What a delightful find!

The Gardyloo Press is a new one for me but this is the offbeat, quirky sort of read that makes collecting private press books worthwhile. Equally important, although I do not have this book in hand it is apparent that this slim volume is not an exercise in amateur hour. The choice of an 18th-century type-face is wonderful, the judicious use of color enlivens the pages and the small vignette illustrations placed within the text are effective. Of course, >1 Glacierman: is teasing us because, contrary to his statement, there are no copies of this work currently available in the secondary market.

I took his statement to reference the second title, not the first, that is: Cabbages: Just Another Look.

My bad. You are correct.

>3 dlphcoracl: You are correct, though. Finding a copy of this book on the market would be a challenge. Many copies are locked up in various institutional collections, and the remaining few do not show up for sale very often. I obtained mine some years ago via a private offer from a bookseller in California, now sadly deceased. I got lucky.
