I have just ordered "How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul". I've read a few pages of a friends copy. Does anyone have an comments about this book?

Let's toss out some of our favorite design related books!

One of the most useful for me (and my class) in the past year was Dos Logos. It's full of contemporary/international logos.

OK, here are a few:

Edward Tufte / Envisioning Information - the book which helped shape my (self-taught) design approach more than any other.

Emil Ruder / Typography: A Manual of Design - published in 1967, this is the single best exploration of experimental typography. It was increasingly scarce until recently, but has now been reissued.

Jaroslav Andel / Avant-Garde Page Design 1900-1950 - a serious and very complete survey of experimental mise en page.

There are many others, but this is a start...

Hi all!

For anyone out there looking to be or in an art director position, I'm reading a great Steven Heller book right now called The Education of an Art Director. A little long-winded and off-topic in parts because it's mostly in interview style, but overall a good resource and very, hehe, educational.

Let us know how "Without Losing Your Soul" is, I've been interested in that one as well!

"How to be a graphic designer without losing your soul" - I just read it, and passed it over to my creative director. It's an awesome book that doesn't talk about design, it talks about the business side for designers. What I like most about it is how the chapters are structured. The beginning of the book talks about your first steps into and out of college and how to get a job, which most 'design-business' books talk about. Then near the end of the book it goes all the way up to the differences bewteen a design firm and an ad agency.

I highly recommend this book. I'm thinking of buying if for friends of mine.

I'm a copywriter (boo hiss) but a book that helped me not be an ass about type is stop stealing sheep by Erik Spiekerman and E.M. Ginger. It's a pretty good little volume that goes over the principals of typography in a gentle, non-technical way.

Share it with that special creative director, copywriter, account worm, or client in your life.

Based on the way you guys discussed about the book, it appears to me that it is a very interesting one. Will try to grab myself a copy of it. :)
