Chosen order of sorting catalogue not sticking

I am currently curating my catalogue and sorting in a particular order on my imac. The last couple of times that I've popped over to Talk and returned to Your Books, the sort order has changed. Usually it stays in whatever order I have sorted by last.

I have been using Talk on my iPad too but not Your Books so that should not have affected the sort order.

A few questions to try to tease this out:
1. What operating system and web browser are you using?
2. On Talk, do you have the Groups and Topic columns separated, or together (as they were on old Talk)?
3. Can you test sorting "Your books" again, and go to Talk then back to "Your books" to see if it's still happening for you? If so, how are you sorting "Your books" and how is it sorted when you return from Talk?

>2 kristilabrie:

1. For this I'm using Safari on mac OS 10.15.7

2. The columns are separated.

3. Right now, if I toggle between Books and Talk, it's fine. I think it happened both times when I put my computer to sleep and came back to it the next day. I'm heading to bed soon, so I'll let you know if it happens again tomorrow.

In my E view, I'm sorting first by Book Crossing ID (which I'm using to keep my series in order) and then by Author. I didn't stop to work out what order it's being re-sorted by (but I'll try, if it happens again) but I noticed it because I'm using the Inventory tags as I'm going through my catalogue and they were on the wrong pages.

So now I’m on my iPad in my bedroom and I popped over to Books where it looks like it’s in my E view and my Paperbacks/ Hardbacks collection as on my desktop but it’s sorted by Entry Date.

So it looks like whenever I use my iPad, the settings switch back to what I have on here, even though I haven’t been using Your Books on my iPad but they don’t switch back to the settings I’m using on the desktop.

Although I don’t think I chose this collection or this view (I usually use view B) from the iPad. I’m working on my catalogue on my iMac in the study where the bookshelves are. It’s easier to edit the catalogue on that than on the iPad, which I use more for Talk.

Does that help?

ETA: iPad Air iOS 12.4.8

Okay, I've just looked at Your Books on my desktop and the sort order hasn't changed from last night. However, usually it opens on the first page (of 23 in this particular collection) but this time it opened on the page I was working on last night.

Whereas on my phone when I check, it’s sorted by Book Crossing ID but not by Author.

And on Your Books on my phone, only ‘Libr’ shows at the top left hand corner as opposed to the ‘L’ logo on talk.

Okay, so "Your books" will show you the page as you have it sorted on each device - it's device/session-specific. So where you left off on your Desktop will be where you see it when you go back on your Desktop; where you left off on your phone will be where you see it on your phone, etc. That also depends on if/when your browser's cookies/cache clear, and may change when that happens as well. NB: I believe sorting by Entry date is the default sort-order, if you haven't changed anything or if you clear your cookies/cache.

The display Style is user-specific: if you are logged into your account on two devices and you change the display Style on one device, refreshing "Your books" on the other device will change the display Style to match the first device.

Ultimately, this seems to me to be a device issue for you and not a bug. If you want to view "Your books" a specific way, then do so as you want to for each device, and keep it there. You can also click the "permanent link" at the bottom-left of "Your books", after you've sorted the way you want, and keep that link that updates in your URL bar as a bookmark to your catalog. This will retain the sort order exactly as you have it so you can return to that view anytime using your bookmark. I hope this helps!

Let me know if there's anything I've missed here or if you have further questions.

>8 kristilabrie: Obviously yesterday things were working as they should and I'm used to opening LT on a device to where I left it on that device last. However the issue is that it doesn't seem to be working that way on my desktop. Today when I opened it, it was sorted by Inventory Entry Date and I know I didn't leave it like that yesterday.

It is not a big issue for me because I can just resort by clicking on the relevant columns and I know you're doing a lot of development on Talk at the moment, but I thought this might be a bug you should be made aware of.

Yup; it keeps going back to Entry Date order (on my desktop).

You mention that it happens after leaving your desktop overnight (or for awhile), yes? This sounds like a cache or cookies-clearing issue, then. If you check to make sure you're not clearing your browser cookies for LibraryThing.com, your sort order should stick to where you left off. I hope this helps!

>12 kristilabrie: Possible, although that would be rather advanced of me to have set that up :0)

Yesterday I used LT on my phone in the bookshop and switched to a different collection (Series to be completed). Today when I opened LT on my desktop and edited a book, when I came back to Your Books, it opened in 'Series to be completed' rather than my 'Paperbacks' collection which I've been working on on my desktop. Is that supposed to happen?

>13 humouress: that's the way it's always been for me, but I don't know if it's expected or a bug. I could make a case for either way.

>13 humouress: So, yeah, I think there's inconsistency between what you view in "Your books" that's session-specific and user-specific. I don't know the specifics (ha) but will ask @timspalding and perhaps he can shed some light, or we can think about during the redesign.

New problem. I don't see it in the topic list but I don't know if I should start a new thread for this:

Now when I edit a book and click 'save' it throws me to my Home page rather than the saved book page. This is annoying (and it's awkward to navigate back to the page).

>17 humouress: Where are you clicking to edit your book from, and where exactly does it return you to? If you can provide URLs for each, that would be helpful, thanks!

Today it seems to be working differently. Usually I change the cover and then click on 'edit your book' to add the cover artist's name. Yesterday it was taking me to my home page once I saved it but today it seems to be taking me back to the covers page. If I click on the title from 'your books' and then edit and save, it seems to take me to the 'book details' page. Before, however, it would take me to the 'main page' when I saved.

ETA: I've checked again and it's working as described above; if I click on 'edit your book' from the covers page, it takes me back to the 'change covers' page when I save whereas if I click on the book title and then edit, it takes me to 'book details'. Much better than being taken to the home page.
