When I was in elementary school (4th grade library) I loved a book series around 3 sisters in Europe who in world war two had to immigrate to the US. I believe only the first book was about this and the rest of the series was about acclimating to life in the middle class in the US.
One particular detail i remember is I believe the oldest sister ended up smuggling some family diamonds to the united states in her violin case.
