Welcome to the 13th year of the challenge! We get lots of new people each year, and we know it can be difficult to "catch up". This thread is just the place for you! The info below will help you get started and make your experience here a good one.
First, where did we come from? Well, back in 2008, Cariola decided to start a group for folks who wanted to challenge themselves to read 75 books in a year. We were a small group, but loved our experience, so decided to do it again! Since then, I've made the yearly groups.
We're at bit of an amorphous organization. Members have jumped in to add features since. SqueakyChu runs the TIOLI challenge. Monthly themes are proposed by many of us - and some have carried over from year to year, like the Halloween read in October. If you've got an idea to try, propose it!

Welcome to LT and the 75ers! Our group gives each of us to create a message chain called a thread to track our reading. In between reporting on our reading, many threads also have discussion and banter on many different subjects. I suggest you take a look at some threads and decide how you’d like to use a thread you might make.
Once you decide to jump in, go to the group page and look for the “Create a New Thread” link. Click it, fill in a title and first message, save, and you’re done!
We’re happy to have anyone participate, even if they choose not to have a personal thread. There are group reads and challenges on various topics, as a well as regular read-a-thons too. Links to all these can be found on the group wiki, which is posted on the group home page.

Hello new author here. I just recently had published a book of poems and short stories. The title of my book is called Teardrops on the Petals .It consist of short stories and poems. Topics cover love , erotic love, poverty , substance abuse, youth and gun violence, some poems are even religious. One of the short stories centers around an abusive, neglectful mother and how her behaviours effect her daughter and son.The other short story symbolizes beauty in being a misfit or rather not fitting into the so called category of not being conventional, normal , or status quo and how sometimes people can have cruel reactions to something that is different or new

Apparently, I ruffled someone's feathers by not replying personally to their post. And then those posts were deleted. Trust me it wasn't personal or intentional. I actually thought I had replied to all messages.
Perhaps if there was a PINNED POST giving us all the RULES and Etiquette we are supposed to adhere to so NEW members can make sure not to ruffle sensitive people's feathers and hurt their feelings.
I was also unaware I had to go to everyone's thread (who has posted on my thread) and post something. Again not intentional or personal.
I thought this was going to be fun but it is starting to be too much work and too many rules to follow.
I've deleted my thread and am leaving the group.
Way to make a new person feel welcome...

Greetings, Good people! I’m new to LT, and I am considering accepting the 75 book challenge. My wife told me that she has read 21 books in the past 5 months or so, and I was impressed. Also, I have this awful habit or ordering interesting reads and never getting to them. Does anyone have a stack by his or her bedside?🤔
So.....I took a quick look at recording what you read, but couldn’t make sense of the need to register weight and book dimensions. Am I looking in the wrong area? Of course, Amazon readily supplies all of that, but what purpose does it serve? Anybody know?
In any case, I need to get started reading and commenting! Any suggestions for a newbie?
Thanks,
Spike

Hi, Anne!
That’s a book I am going to tackle! I luved her comparison with the toxins that emerged from the permafrost and the current political situation. Jan 6 showcased people with Confederate flags, Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and other white militia groups. What was interesting was that military members, police men, politicians, a lawyer etc stormed the Capitol in the spirit of 1776.
So, in 1776, I think most Americans are clear about who the Patriots were? But what about the Civil War? Which side would be deemed patriotic?

>28 SpikeAdams: Hi SpikeAdams.
Welcom here!
Some people just like to have all the specifics of their books so they can say "I've read 40 pounds of books this year."
You are free to enter which specifics you like to enter. I use the book editing page and the common knowledge page and like to enter as many things I can like title, author, number of pages, first sentence and last sentence, that kind of things. And I enter a description for which I use the back-cover text of a book.
The way to start is reading some threads (and starring them if you want to follow someone). You can look in someone's library to see what they have entered.

The Instructions told me to start here???
... and here- does not permit me to put my username into the heading-???
So, I am already in violation of instructions.
I am wanting ( sort of ) to join this group ??? But I don't wish to be yelled at if I do it wrong. I have read 21 books, so far this year; admittedly, most of them have been children's books. My goals are to complete all the Newbery Medalists; and am attempting to read Classical Literature in historical order. Additionally, I have to stop to read to the grandchildren, so I threw some of that in the list, too.
Feel free to let me know that I do not belong in this group. I have hemmed & hawed for a few weeks now between this and a few other similar groups- but always found the instructions, a bit daunting. Thank you

>33 EGBERTINA: Welcome EGBERTINA. Everybody can join this group and I think there is not much you can do wrong. And I've never experienced any yelling at all. So start your own thread if you want to. You can also just read the threads of other people. You can see how other people use their threads. When you give them a star you can keep track of the ones you find interesting enough to follow.

Welcome! Sorry for the confusion. As Connie says, we don’t have much in the way of rules, and we don’t yell. Some folks start a thread of their own to track reading, others just comment on other people’s reading. Either way is perfectly fine with us!
If you decide to start a thread, the easiest way to do that is to go to the group home page and look for the “Post A New Topic” button. Click this, put in a title and first message, then click “Post Topic”. That’ll get you started!

Good morning!
I joined LibraryThing yesterday and imported my entire Goodreads book list.
I'm Jim, 57, married, living in New Jersey outside of Philadelphia. I work as a customer service representative in the US government.
This is the first LT group I've joined. There will be others. I am looking forward to participating.

I set myself a challenge to do this at the start of the year, without realising there was a group here on LT with the same goal! So, only into the second half of the year, but have belatedly joined up! Will start a thread in the next day or so.

I'm new to the thread. Hope I'm doing this right. I read primarily Mathematics History, Mathematics Biographies, and Recreational Mathematics. I have over one thousand math books in my library, and adding daily! I'm doing my darndest to get them all listed in my library here in LibraryThing.

I see you made a thread that didn't have a title, and the first message was deleted. That was the right track, but I think you may have gotten caught up in a spam-prevention mechanism that allows threads to be deleted if the first message is deleted.
Here's how to make your own thread:
1. Go to the group page here - https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/23215/75-Books-Challenge-for-2021
2. Click "Post a New Topic"
3. Type in a Subject and a Message. Note the Subject is hard to change once you save, but the first message can be edited at any time.
4. Click "Post Message" when you're done. You've made your thread!
Folks use their threads in many different way. Some just list books as they read them, others post reviews. Some threads are very chatty and conversation can wander all over the place. Take a look at some to see some examples.
Feel free to send me a private message or post on my thread if you have more questions. I'm at https://www.librarything.com/topic/332452

Anything you've read this year can count. It's up to you!
Fortunately, we aren't so hung up on the numbers. Many of our members never make 75, others read several times that. Mostly we just want to talk about books. 😀

>15 genealogy_nana: I love reading and one of my favourite authors is CS Lewis. So far, I have read "Out of the Silent Planet", "Hideous Strength," "Screwtape Letters," and many more. I also love "Lilith" by George MacDonald. Furthermore, I love classic literatures like "Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain and "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. For suspense novels or what they call "whodunits," I collect Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham, Ngaio Marsh and more contemporary authors like PD James. I also love Jane Austen, and more contemporary but neoclassic Betty Neels. I also admire the (spiritual/supernatural) fiction of Frank Perretti and have read his "In This Present Darkness," "Piercing the Darkness," and "The Oath." I want to challenge myself to reading more books this year and try other authors too.

Can't quite make the 75 book mark. Work stops me cold with that. But during the last half of this year I have went through some HEAVY titles that require more than the average attention to the page. I review everything I read so please feel free to comment and criticize me. Some of these titles left me wiping blood from my eyes by the time I was done.

I’m a bit late discovering this group but hopefully I’ll be more involved next year. I’m Scottish but lived in Adelaide South Australia since February 1982. I only managed to read 54 books this year but I’m on my 55th which I may not finish until next year. Highlight for the year was two very different books “Klara and the Sun” and “The personal librarian” all my readings are on Goodreads as I haven’t managed to figure out how to get them in here! Name on there is Margaret Galbraith. Merry Christmas all from a 37C day here in SA 🎄
