Recently a spammer posted a message on my 75 Book Challenge thread, and then used the thread continuation feature to create a new spam thread. You can see it here, and the spam message is #368:
https://www.librarything.com/topic/324968
By the time I discovered this, the spam message, the user, and the continued spam thread had all been removed, but I was no longer able to continue the thread myself. In this specific instance it's okay, because we will move to a new group with new threads in the new year.
Still, this situation does raise some questions. I realize not all threads have single owners and it may not be feasible (nor always necessary) to set "admin privileges" for threads. But if this is a new spam technique, it's likely to happen again. It would be great to be able to reverse the spam continuation so that the thread could be continued properly.

Have you asked staff to fix your thread? I expect they could do that. If it happens often, a more general solution will be needed. This does need dealing with, because the ad and Website are still visible in the continuation subject.

>2 MarthaJeanne: I didn't do that, because a) I didn't know how, and b) as mentioned, I will no longer use this thread after 12/31.
I decided to log it here because, as you said, it probably *should* be dealt with, and the need for a more general solution seems likely.

It would sure bother me to have that ad on my thread. Even just a short time.
If you go to the bottom of most pages - like this one - there is a contact link that helps you contact staff directly.

>1 lauralkeet: This happened recently, though I can't recall exactly how we handled it last time. (First day back from vacation for me. :) ) I suspect it will indeed happen again. Will discuss this with developers to see if there's some sort of mechanism we can put in place, for a long-term solution, so valid threads can be re-opened to continuing after a spammer's continued thread has been removed.
I'll see about opening up the thread to continuing again, regardless: surely some sort of manual process site admins can do from the backend, in the short-term, if I recall correctly.

Last I remember threads could be continued multiple times. Did that change?

>7 jjwilson61:
You can continue #1 to #2, and #2 to #3, etc. But you can't continue #1 (or #2, etc.) more than once. So when the spammer continued @lauralkeet's thread, then was removed along with the continued thread, she couldn't continue it herself.
(Looks like staff has fixed the issue on that particular thread now, though.)

yes indeed it is -- thank you very much!

Yep, @timspalding showed me the way (insert Star Wars pun here). It's a manual process but easy enough to do! If it happens again just message/email me directly and I'll be happy to help.
