Found: YA fantasy magical animal sanctuary island

I last read it around 2007/08 ish. Definitely YA. I’m pretty sketchy on the plot but I think it was about a magical animal sanctuary. It was definitely set on an island. I think it was run/ overseen but a couple of old women who may have been witches (I really can’t remember). I’m pretty sure a young girl ended up on the island for some reason. It had a dark cover, dark blue I think, and I’m pretty sure there was a dodo on the front. Something like monster island?
