Did the postman ring for you?

I'm about to read The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain: Anyone any thoughts on it?
It is a title I've known for years but never read.

Never read it, and only recently saw the movie - an odd gap in my noir watching. The next evening, my boyfriend began reading me snippets - just a few - and I have to admit it was a terribly unappealing, unpleasant love affair! Not to mention the plot's convolutions. But that can be good in a book... :) Just depends. Do let us know. I'm curious what you'll think.

Started it and almost shocked (almost) - I recognise so much of the atmosphere, and the 'noir' is downright inky.
I suspect it is one of those books I am not going to particularly like - but already I sense a quality to the writing - and an honest exposure to some very unpleasant characters.

Yes, I can see that. Let me know how it goes!

After a false start or two I finished the book - quite quickly.
I've posted a fuller review, but will say it takes a little bit of getting in to - it is worth it.
It is an 'adult' book, and brutal - but that fits the subject.
