In middle school ('98-'99ish) I remember my teacher reading a book to the class (that she never finished). It was about a father (maybe grandfather) who is always working on inventions. The kids would frequently notice things going missing around the house that the father would use in his inventions, like the bread box. The father disappeared after testing out his latest invention. Somehow the kids realize that he built a time machine. They were able to construct a new one buy gathering up the things that had gone missing around the house and they set off looking for him. In the past (I think) an intelligent elephant like creature called a bungee (sp?) eats some bad eggs and meets up with either the kids or the father (not sure which).
That's about all I can remember, I think that's where my teacher stopped reading. It's been bugging me for the last 20 years not knowing the end of this story. Any help would be appreciated.
