I'm back in. I've got 2 books I'm reading from this weekend 1. What I know for sure and A Swim in the pond in the rain plus some graphic novels and maybe a book or two from the library. Let the Summer Reading begin!!

May 20, 2021, 3:51 pm

I'm in.

I'll be finishing Miss Benson's Beetle.

Thoughts:
Even though I'm vaccinated and restrictions are loosening up, I'm still not going out much. Main change is more family visits. I'm liking life at this slower, less frantic pace.

Count me in again. Our library released their adult summer reading Bingo cards this week, so I need to get working on my blackout.

I'm in- I have "cabin fever" so I have been sitting outside this week in the shade with a hat, cool drink and a book. Oh, Ontario is still in lockdown!

I will participate again. It has become a "thing" for me. It is 13 months now that I have been doing this.

I am working on two books this weekend. Giver of Stars for a real life book club, and Mauve How One Man Invented a Color That Changed the World for an upcoming challenge here on LT.

I'll join again. I'm catching up on my Romance of the three Kingdoms group read. I have about 14 chapters to read before the end of May to be up to date.
On a lighter note, also need to read my library book The Road Trip by Beth O'Leary.

I'd like to participate this weekend. The same old problem -- too many books, too little time.

Friday night check in

Books read from: I am reading Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes for a book club that I am joining up here in the borderlands of Kansas/Nebraska. I started reading Mauve: How One Man Invented A Color That Changed the World by Simon Garfield. I am listening to Golden Tresses of the Dead the last Flavia DeLuce novel by Alan Bradley.

Books finished: Brilliance and Fire: A Biography of Diamonds by Rachelle Bergstein.
Time reading: 2 hours - I went with my sister this morning and sat in the car and read while she shopped.
Time posting: 15 minutes
Food: This morning was a bagel and coffee.

Thoughts: It has been so pleasant reading in the mornings with the sound of the wind. I think Kansas has suddenly become the Pacific Northwest. It is gloomy, misty, and cool most of the day.

Non-book activities: I have spent time with my mother in the nursing home and she will be coming home on Monday. I have worked more than I thought I would and it is a drag. But the upside of that is that I am ordering books. That is fun. I went shopping for pots today and plants to plant in them. I will try to plant them tomorrow. They will look good on my mother's deck. As soon as I get done here I will be baking a plum cake to take to community game night - which is tonight.

Catch up for Friday evening and early hours

I read a bit in the afternoon but then dashed out to collect a pile of library reservations from two branches - not my nearest libraries, So I have a heap of shiny new library books some of which I really hope to get to very soon. I finished a few pages when I get home, then slept for a few hours, have read a little more and played around with LT and plan to get a couple more hours sleep and indulge in a little more reading later this morning (and this afternoon).

Books read from: 5
Liz Moore, The Words of Every Song
Elizabeth George Speare, The Witch of Blackbird Pond
Patrick Gale, Three Decades of Stories
Rosemary Dinnnage, Alone! Alone! Lives of Some Outsider Women

Saturday morning check in

Books read from: Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes for a book club that I am joining up here in the borderlands of Kansas/Nebraska. Mauve: How One Man Invented A Color That Changed the World by Simon Garfield. I am listening to Golden Tresses of the Dead the last Flavia DeLuce novel by Alan Bradley.

Books finished: 1
Time reading: .5 hours - Over Breakfast this morning
Time posting: 15 minutes
Food: This morning was a bagel and coffee.

Thoughts: I am liking Giver of Stars. It is a totally different book than Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. Giver has an emphasis on women's lives and the building of the coal mining unions in Kentucky.
Non-book activities: I baked a plum cake last night and I think I got it a little on the dry side. It is a new recipe that uses whole wheat flour. Along with the plums, this is a fairly healthy cake recipe. I am going to frost it this afternoon and will have it for dinner tomorrow along with tater tot casserole.

Sunday night check in

Books read from: Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes for a book club that I am joining up here in the borderlands of Kansas/Nebraska. Mauve: How One Man Invented A Color That Changed the World by Simon Garfield and I started Singing Whales and Flying Squid by Richard Ellis for the Nonfiction challenge here on LT. I am listening to Golden Tresses of the Dead the last Flavia DeLuce novel by Alan Bradley.

Books finished: 2 Brilliance and Fire by Rachelle Bergstein and Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
Time reading: 1.5 hours - at lunch
Time posting: 30 minutes
Food: Homemade casserole and prune cake

Thoughts: I finished reading Giver of Stars and really liked it. I think that it probably didn't get the readership it deserved because it was released at the same time as another book that used the WPA's Horseback Librarian project as it's subject. (That book was Book Woman of Troublesome Creek). As a result I think that both books suffered a bit when it came to sales. Both are good books and I hope that readers continue to find them and enjoy them.
Non-book activities: The weather today was perfect for sitting outside and so my cousins and I did just that and talked about schools, life, and people in our community.

I loved Mudbound. The movie version, released in 2017, was quite good too.
>36 benitastrnad:
I'll be reading Giver of Stars very soon. Book Woman of Troublesome Creek was terrific. I had never heard of the blue people of Kentucky before.

Mon - weekend wrap-up

Books:
Finished Miss Benson's Beetle.
Started Musical Chairs by Amy Poeppel. Very funny scenes.
Once again listening to Devolution which I've checked out several times. Should be able to finish now that I'm walking often again.

Food:
Excellent Chinese takeout last night with enough leftover for probably 3 more meals!

Other activity:
Spent a couple hours with my mom. She only woke up for a few minutes but she smiled and recognized me.
Watched episode of Mare of Easttown. Kate Winslet is amazing in the title role.
Played games - Bejeweled, BookWorm, Alchemy, Jewels Magic.

Thoughts: Mostly of my mom and the events and eras of the century that encompassed her life.

Weather: sunny and warm all weekend. Presently it's sunny and 88 F. (31 C.) at 1pm
