I have been searching for this book for years, the plot has stuck with me for so long, it is one of the most incredible stories I have ever read
Fiction, dystopian-esque, published before 2016
PLOT:
- A boy (I can't remember his name, I think it was something generic) goes about his daily life, works at a cafe, goes to school
- People start to forget him (they stare at him blankly, his mum does not recognise him and treats him as an intruder, people stop acknowledging his existence)
- This is all happening alongside the world turning grey, colours begin to fade, the boy is confused about why all this is happening
- Eventually, the world turns completely grey, devoid of colour except for a single red rose, which he picks
- The world becomes less tangible and he falls into this alternate reality
- It is described as dark with bare horizons, cold
- He meets a girl who is trapped there too, it is hard to find food, I think there was some sort of cabin they stayed in
- They have deep conversations
- They eventually find a way for him to leave, and he re-enters the real world
- He wakes up in his own bedroom and he can't remember anything that happened in the alternate reality
- However, he reaches into his breast pocket and finds the red rose which reminds him of the girl he met there and the whole crazy experience
The book ends with him taking the rose out of his pocket and remembering

Omg, that is the book! - it's out of print so that is probably why I couldn't find it. I have honestly been looking for years, so I can't thank you enough!!
