I would consider this book to be Young Adult Fiction. I remember it being a pretty thick book, though I'm not sure, I read it about 5 years ago. I didn't get very far into the book, but here are some key moments I can remember:
When promises are made people make bracelets. If the promise is broken, the person wearing the promise bracelet will feel a terrible, burning sensation. At the beginning of the book, the main character witnesses one kid giving another kid his snack (cake/bread/treat/something like that) and makes him promise not to eat it while he went somewhere for a moment. The kid broke the promise leaving him to feel the burn of a broken promise, while everyone around them shakes their head in disappointment.
The main character mentions that he has had a promise bracelet for as long as he can remember. Then, one day be breaks the promise without even knowing what it was. He then has to run away and into (or across, I'm not sure) a desert.
This is as far into the story I got. I was very sad when I learned my brother stole then lost, so I really hope someone can help me find it. Thank you in advance!
