Found: YA Fiction, Boy Refuses to Eat Rabbit Shot by Father

Hello! I have been Googling this specific book scene for years, with no luck. I recall reading a book (for school maybe?) where towards the beginning, a boy was called to dinner in which freshly hunted rabbit was served. The boy refuses to eat it, even after his father tells him he cleaned all the remnants of the shot out of it. I cannot remember the rest of the plot of this book,
the title, nor other scenery. I believe it takes place in a rural area in 20th century U.S., being written around that time as well.
