I don't remember if it was Christie or not but I think it was (if not, written similarly in terms of style of period)

a man, his wife, and his mistress (among others) are at the man's house (a party)
there's an event with shooting / target practice and the wife has poor aim
the man is found dead, wife found holding gun, mistress tries to take gun out of wife's hands but the gun falls into a pool (no fingerprints can be traced; mistress thinks wife killed the man & is trying to help her)
gun ends up being not the one the man was shot with
the police think it's the wife but have no real way to convict her
the mistress is an artist & she makes a sculpture of a horse which she shows to the police when they question her & it turns out to be a Trojan horse in that it holds the real gun that was used to kill the man (mistress helps the wife, who really is the killer)

thank you very much to anyone reading this! I've been trying to remember the name of this story for the longest time
