I'm in

I won't have a great deal of time Friday except on my commute and perhaps later in the evening, but I hope to find some time on Saturday and Sunday to join in. I do have a few other things to work on.

I hope to spend the entire weekend at home, so I will be spending some time reading while I wait for the bread dough to raise.

Saturday morning update

Books reading from: Read a small bit in Color of the Sea by John Hamamura today. I read 150 pages of Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley by Antonio Garcia Martinez in the last week and have learned much about the startup culture in Silicon Valley. I also started reading Temptation of Forgiveness by Donna Leon on Thursday. As always it immediately captured my attention. I am listening to and very much enjoying Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid.

Food: I had blueberry flavored tea and a crossiant for breakfast while I caught up in my hardcopy book diary and then read a chapter in a book.
Thoughts: I am 60 pages into Color of the Sea and am really getting into this book. Chaos Monkeys is turning out to be just what I thought - a book by a guy with an overblown ego who uses the F Bomb twice on each page. But I will persist as I think there might be some kernel of knowledge in it somewhere. I am about to finish Such A Fun Age and am having a great time listening to this book. I think it is going to be one of my Best of the Year.

Non-book activities: I have baking to do to get ready for the holidays and have some house cleaning to get done. For first time in three weeks I will have the entire weekend to work around my house and it really needs it. Weather turned cold yesterday so it will be nice and cozy to be in the kitchen with the stove on.

Food: I mixed my granola and have it baking in the oven.
Thoughts: I spent most of my reading time this afternoon on Temptation of Forgivness and so far have read about 100 pages in it. I am about to finish Such A Fun Age and am having a great time listening to this book. I think it is going to be one of my Best of the Year. While I was gone the lawn service came and mowed my lawn. It totally didn't need it and isn't growing much but now I am stuck with paying them and I had hoped to save this money to use on my Thanksgiving Trip.

Non-book activities: I went grocery shopping this afternoon and because of the football game had to go to a farther out branch of Publix so listened to a huge portion of Such a Fun Age and it has totally captured my attention. I still have to mix up my bread dough, and will get to that shortly.

>30 benitastrnad: e you listening to library electronic audio books? I've borrowed quite a few from libraries but am better at finding books which sound like they'd be interesting to listen to than actually err... listening. That said, I've really enjoyed the relatively small amount of audio listening I've done.

In the UK we have a BBC radio station which includes lots of abridged adaptations of books, plays and dramas, programmes discussing books and other cultural stuff. As well as this, Radio 4, there is also Radio 4 Extra which is the repeats station, with oldies and stuff that I've probably missed Then there is the website/podcast source Sounds, plus an archive which predates sounds and includes old episodes of two of the book programmes along with stuff like Desert Island Discs. So I listen to a lot of Radio 4 rather than specific audio books.

Post midnight Saturday/Sunday

It's taken me a while to get round to posting - I went to a Friends of Marcus Garvey Library meeting this afternoon, and then dozed on the sofa for a couple of hours or so after I got home. But I have been reading, yesterday and today. I also read quite a lot before 5 pm yesterday. I haven't finished any books because I started at about 60% and 40% of the books at the top of my current reading pile and my reading has been split between several books. I don't know whether I'll finish any on Sunday either but expect to finish a couple on Monday or Tuesday

>26 Carmenere: I read Fahrenheit 451 over fifteen years ago and loved it but somehow never got around to reading anything else by Bradbury. I think partly because I somewhat overdosed on horribleness (and Fahrenheit 451 is horrifying). I’ve regained my appetite for scary things now so just recently finished Something Wicked This Way Comes and it was a great read.

I listen to mostly library audio books. On CD in my car. I find myself sitting in my car listening in parking lots and of course, lots of "Driveway Moments." Sometimes I feel guilty about the amount of gasoline and air pollution that goes on due to these lapses in social consciousness. (grins, sheepishly.)

Our local public library has lots of audio books and is increasing its CD audio collection, as well as its digital audio collection. I don't really have a car that has a wat to hook up the USB to speakers, but with all these audio CD's available I don't need to update any technology. I would listen to many more books in the house but I have plenty of screen time as it is.

I do listen to several podcasts from the BBC Radio 4. I listen to Melvin Bragg program and listened to History of the World in 100 Objects. I also listen to several book review podcasts from various sources, but I do that while I am working in the kitchen. I would listen to books while working in the kitchen but don't have a CD player on a laptop. One of these days I will get a digital account at our public library and download digital audio, but that day isn't here - yet.

I remember that as of Saturday morning, the performance was still on, and we were debating whether it was wise to attend. Then we got notification that all shows were cancelled and they were hoping to resume in the fall. Of course that did not happen!
