Fiction
Based in the 2000s I believe.
I read the book about 2013 it is meant for junior and high schoolers.
Blue cover of a falling girl... I think lol
The teenage girl just moved to a new town with her drunkard dad. They live in a trailer. (On a beach?) She doesn't do well in school with making friends and such. She gets asked to the fall formal but she doesn't have a dress. She makes it with this old lady who lives in town. The lady's house wasn't air-conditioned, she talks about helping her open her windows at night. I believe the dress they make is a formal, sparkly, midnight blue.
This next part is a bit hazy so it could be wrong... She gets to the dance and the mean girls make fun of her and she runs into the forest and that's how she gets murdered or maybe it's suicide...
During the whole thing, you're also reading the point of view of a detective who is following a murder in town. Well, it all turns out the girl (who's other point of view we'd been following) was murdered.
It made me cry a lot at the end. I think throughout it also touched on suicidal thoughts..
