Collected Strange Short stories - possibly Japanese - 1980's or earlier

When I was in high school (early 1980's) I came across a book of Japanese (I think) short stories that's stuck in my mind that I'd really like to re-read.

There are two particular scenes from different stories that I recall.

1. Two (novice?) monks come across a temple with cats painted on the wall. One sleeps in a small cupboard and wakes up safely, the other sleeps in the main room and is found dead in the morning covered in scratches. I'm not sure if they stayed there on the same night or different nights.

2. A man is saying to a woman that he thinks her arm is beautiful so she takes it off and effectively says ' you can borrow it for the night'. I think I recall that she kissed the elbow so it would bend.

It's the second story one in particular that sticks in my mind because I can't for the life of me remember how it ends.

Hoping someone has come across it somewhere.

>1 Damiella: There's a story called "One Arm" by Yasunari Kawabata, but it's probably been anthologized in multiple places.

The cat one, I don't know. Sorry.

Thank you!! that was the one I really wanted to reread so it gives me a trail to follow. I'm positive you're right in that it's been anthologized more than once - as long as I can find one it'll do me nicely :)

ETA: I can't believe how quick that was - I'm truly impressed.

First one sounds like a version of the Japanese fairy tale "The Boy Who Drew Cats".

>5 brizzzy: : thank you! I'll add that to my list to try to locate this year (even if it's not specifically what I'm looking for it could well contain some other gems)
