Welcome 2022 and to my thread!

Long story short……LT 75er for 13 years and still trying to reach 75 books a year! I thank the powers that be to allow me to stick around this awesome group. The mantra has been “It’s not about the numbers….” but I’m still going to try and have fun doing it!
I normally read in Northeast Ohio but have been known to read wherever and whenever I roam.
Mom to my son,Will, 22 who will finish his Masters in May in Slavic Studies and furry kids Lev, my problem child and his sister, Melia (Lia) a sweetheart, both 1 ½.
After 30 years of municipal government employment, I retired. When not reading I do what retired folks do, volunteer at my church, crochet and cross stitch, work in my yard, take walks, travel and visit wineries though breweries and distilleries work just fine too. This is much longer than I wanted….so much for minimalism.

No long lists, just keeping it simple

Longer Projects:
Tinderbox - HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers
Under Jerusalem
Bible in 365 days
100 great novels scratch off poster

January to do list:
1. In Graphic novel (Library) 3/5 - TIOLI #6
2. Hollow City Graphic novel (Library). 3.5/5
3. The Henna Artist - Library Book Club. 4.75/5
4. The Frozen Thames - Xmas Swap gift from Carrie. 5/5
5. Give Unto Others NetGalley
6. The Secret to Superhuman Strength
7. Locke & Key Small World

February to do list:
The Last Time I Lied Library book club
Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour Bookstore

First read of 2022

1. In.
Will McPhail
Grapic Novel
2121
3 of 5 stars

Have you noticed that it seems more difficult now a days to connect with people? When texting limits the dialog we used to have with others, when a conversation was more than a Tweet.
And when you actually come face to face with another human,do you just act the part, say the right lines but actually don't know the people around you and are those people actually being attentive to you? Or, do you say something that really matters?
The author/illustrator examines this and shares his thoughts about what matters, while there's still time.

Happy 2022! Sounds like a thought-provoking book to start the new year with. Ironic that we can communicate more easily (I remember writing long letters to friends back in Canada when my family was posted abroad when I was 14, and eagerly watching for mail every. single. day. Same when I started university a few years later. Phone was two pricey and there was NO EMAIL, lol. And yet... It was kind of a test of friendship. Who was willing to make that investment in sustaining a relationship?

I have found myself thinking more about what we lose in large communities. We don't "know" each other as well as we once did, and while there's a kind of tyranny in small groups, people within them also know that they can rely on each other and that there's little point in hiding the fact that you're grump in the mornings, or can't cook, or whatever it is. And everybody has his or her own flaws. I don't know that small groups and closeness breed tolerance and acceptance (I wish...) but it certainly makes us aware that we really can't camouflage what we see as our weaknesses.

Apologies for rambling non-minimalist thoughts!

29Carmenere
Jan 2, 2022, 8:22 pm

Greetings, Suzanne! A little too provoking for the first day of the new year.
I recall the anticipation of waiting for the mailman to deliver a response to my letters but even then I didn't really talk about "what matters". I think there needs to be a bond of trust between the parties to really open oneself to others and I guess I didn't/don't feel that often.
I find my coffee group or two former co-workers have become the people with whom I can let me hair down.

No apologies necessary. Visitor's to my thread are not required to be minimalist's.

Morning, Lynda. I hope you had a good holiday weekend. My feeders are busy despite the cold. Only single digits out there now. We ended up with 3 inches or so of snow, which was much better than the 6-8 they were predicting. Did you get any?

Morning Mark. My feeders are crazy busy! We saw a goldfinch yesterday and red breasted nuthatch. They are really enjoying the bird food bell Santa brought them for Christmas.
We did not receive any snow last night but it is colder. Glad you didn't get the predicted 8". Forecasters seem to have gone to worst case scenarios.
Have a good day, my friend.

#2 Hollow City Graphic Novel
Ransom Riggs
3.5/5

Woe, a lot going on in this GN. Miss Peregrine has been turned into a bird and the Peculiar children must find a way to bring her back to normal but first she's gone missing and they must locate her and keep her out of danger. First, though, they need to fend off Hollowgasts, Wights and Loops which take them to different places and times. There's never a dull moment and the conclusion implies that a third story will follow.

There is a heavy layer of gloom in my neck of the woods followed by a winter storm watch for Monday into Tuesday. Another round of snow, possibly up to 10 inches but forecast was not accurate on Friday, so I'm being optimistic for just a dusting.

Forgot to mention, when Will was home we watched Lawrence of Arabia. I didn't think I would like it but I was pleasantly surprised. Well, it's got Omar Sharif, that's a no brainer.
Anyway, A couple of days after, we watched the second installment of Boba Fett on Disney+ and we're thinking OMG this train sequence looks just like the one form LofA!
So, Will googles it and sure enough Boba Fett's train episode is inspired by LofA! Who woulda thought!?

61Crazymamie
Jan 9, 2022, 12:21 pm

>60 Carmenere: Sorry about the heavy layer of gloom. Hoping you get just a dusting since that is what you want. I would want the winter storm with the 10 inches but that is because I am in snow withdrawal after nine years of pretty much none.

Love the serendipity of the movie/tv watching - I love when stuff like that happens.

62Carmenere
Jan 9, 2022, 4:17 pm

I understand! If I didn't have snow anymore, I'd want it too, I suppose. With the humidity you have to deal with, you deserve a foot of snow occasionally.

Serendipity, when it's noticed, is nothing short of amazing.

#3 The Henna Artist
Alka Joshi
Library book group
4.75/5

I simply loved this book. I never needed to look at the Character's Page because they were so well defined, I never was confused as to who was who.
The locations in India, their traditions and caste system were both clear and troublesome.
The circumstances of the characters made me emotional ranging from incredulous to sorrow and even a little angry.
It certainly had all the characteristics of a novel I won't soon forget.

Hi Lynda, I have my copy of Winesburg, Ohio on hand and I am looking forward to reading it. A number of years ago my daughter asked me about movies from the 1960s so we watched a few - "To Sir With Love" was one and "Lawrence of Arabia" was another. We enjoyed both but our love definitely went to "Sir".

66PawsforThought
Jan 10, 2022, 6:51 pm

Oh, I love Lawrence of Arabia - such a beautiful film. Like Mark, I have haven’t seen it in years (I think the last time was around when Peter O’Toole died, which the internet tells me is almost ten years ago - time flies). I really ought to re-watch it, but I’ve been meaning to read Lawrence’s book so not sure which order I’ll do it in.
Thanks for the reminder!

>63 Carmenere: Hi Lynda. We didn't get a lot of snow, just enough to make me hope my granddaughter made it home safely from her work place. My grandmother, whom I loved dearly, was a worrier as she got older. I've become like her. She had so many wonderful traits, so I am also proud to be like her in other ways, but I do wish I wasn't a worrier.

I've added The Henna Artist to the TBR pile, and hope to read it soon. Years ago, when I saw the movie Ghandi, I became obsessed with learning about the history of British subjugation of India. The movie also featured the 1948 bloody break up of India and Pakistan. My husband at the time, noted that while the movie ticket was $4.00, the books I accumulated were $400. He exaggerated, but my quest was thorough, and I learned quite a lot.

I am anxious to read the Henna Artist and note your comments about sorrow and anger. That is exactly how I felt when reading the history of India during that very traumatic time.

Fast forward to a few years ago when a lovely Indian family moved next door. They are lovely, gracious, sharing and very kind people. However, when a little boy and girl came to play with the children who lived next door, the grand mother refused their entry, telling me "they were "Paristanys." And, she made a hissing sound when she used the word. It lead me to believe the war was not over.

I send all good wishes for a wonderful 2022. And, much love as well!

68Carmenere
Jan 10, 2022, 7:18 pm

>64 msf59: It was the best, Mark! I had never even given it a chance, it was like, "Peter O'Toole, nope". Silly me.

>65 DeltaQueen50: Yay, Judy!! I'm glad you're ready to go with Winesburg. I'll post a thread at the beginning of February and begin March 1.
I first saw TSwL when I was just a little, wee little kid but something about Poitier just clicked with me and I watched it again and again. Something about his cool level headed demeanor impressed me, even then.
LoA, well that's a different animal. The wide screen shots the stellar cast screams major Hollywood production. It had a little humor too which took me off guard. I liked that.

>66 PawsforThought: You're welcome, PfT. You really need to thank my son, Will. He's wanted to see it for a long time so borrowed it from the library for us to watch during Christmas break. I didn't make a fuss about it cause I'd watch a blank screen just as long as he wanted to spend time with me.
I was pleasantly surprised, right from the start.

69Carmenere
Jan 10, 2022, 7:29 pm

>67 Whisper1: Hi Linda! You must have posted while I was typing my response to other posts.
Funny, I've always considered myself cool as a cucumber until I lost Bill and my mom. They were the worriers and I was spoiled living in a ladeda world. Now, I am a worrier. I don't like it but can totally understand now what my mom used to tell me when I told her she worried too much, "It's just the way I am." I've got to reiterate to myself what I used to tell her "If God takes care of the birds, he'll surely take care of you."
The Indian culture is fascinating. The Henna Artist is set in 1955 and I wonder just how much it has changed. If Bollywood is any indication, I'd guess it changed quite a bit but unless you live there, who's to say.

At the beginning of the 11pm news last night, the newscasters and forecasters were all in a tithy about the 10 inches of snow on the way. Fast forward to 11:15pm and the forecaster said the winter storm advisory was downgraded to a watch and maybe 3 to 5 inches expected. Well, we barely got a trace of snow. *shrugs*

4 inches seems manageable. Glad that's all you got.

>79 cbl_tn: Happy Sunday, Carrie! Snow has not started here, they're estimating a start time of 4ish. Still, the line continues to waiver. Whatever happens with the first storm from the south, we surely will get lake effect from the snow that's coming in from Canada. Yikes!
It's interesting you mention your mom's observation. Sometimes it's just sage wisdom earned over a lifetime rather than 5 different models that can predict the weather more accurately. Our local stations are always bringing in new forecasters from hither dither and yon who are virtually learning on the job.

#4 The Frozen Thames
Helen Humphreys
2007
5/5 Thanks, Carrie!

I found this collection of short stories fascinating. All of them relate to the years in which London's River Thames froze over, 1142 - 1895. Although many such moments were embraced by the locals for frozen faires, sport, transportation, and even camouflage, there are also moments of tragedy, destruction and disaster. Let me also mention, these frozen winters were sometimes hardened even more so by plagues.
Humphreys' descriptive prose brought me to the edge of my seat as if I were sitting on the bank of the Thames. I highly recommend this collection.

Now, I really want to read Coventry and Orlando by Virginia Woolf.

I need to replace my bathtub which was incorrectly installed 10 years ago because 5 years in the tub split on the bottom. (we, later learned, no additional support was put underneath it. We patched it but sometimes leaked onto the kitchen ceiling. Long story short, I called out the plumber to give me an estimate to replace. Thank goodness he needed to check our water supply, a well, and we discovered a leak had sprung from the pipes leading to the well tank. Good grief! Those fixer-uppers came out yesterday and fixed that, ugh. Anyway, chain supply situation has a waiting time of 2 months on bathtubs. Sometimes, I feel as if I'm living in Soviet Russia.

I finished watching season three of Afterlife on Netflix and I've got to say, I just don't know how to take it. It left me with a tragic feeling. Some of this seasons episodes had me splitting my sides with laughter but the conclusion left me with an uneasy feeling.

Moving on to Peaky Blinders which was recommended to me by my sister in law. First episode, pretty good.

Off to do some reading. Bitterly cold outside and I'm staying in except to fill the bird feeders.

#5 Give Unto Others
Donna Leon
NetGalley e-book
3/5

I like Ms. Leon, don't get me wrong but this novel, due to be released a few months, seems like a non-starter. No murders, not a lot of action, I'd call it more of a cerebral non-thriller.
That said, any book by Leon with her lovely descriptions of Venice make for a pleasant literary vacation.

Eek, how embarrassing it is when I can not find my own thread.

One of the books I'm currently reading is The Last Time I Lied for my library book group. The chapters alternate between the present and back 15 years ago. I started thinking, is this an easier way for an author to write a book?

I'm also slow reading Tinder Box: HBO's Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers. I acquired it through Lt's Early Reviewers and I highly recommend it for tv viewers of their programming. Lots of insights into Soprano's, Sex and the City, Game of Thrones etc. from the people who created them, starred in them etc.

Big storm is headed this way on Thursday/Friday. Forecasters aren't sure if it's rain, ice or snow. One thing I don't want is fast snow melt, or ice on electrical lines and loss of electricty.

Morning, Lynda! I know nothing about football but I see the Bengals won the game, so I know you're happy.
We finished AfterLife last night. I get what you meant by tragic.
*Spoiler* I thought about it for a few minutes after the last scene. He'd given his insurance money away, and then that "so long" gesture to his friend. I even asked Mike if he thought Tony killed himself, if that was the implication, but we both agree that it meant that time passed and he remained alone the rest of his life. Which is so tragic. Gervais gave nearly everyone a happy ending, or at least the hope of happiness, except his character.

113Carmenere
Feb 1, 2022, 9:22 pm

I'm glad to see you and Mike are going for the happier, but still disheartening, conclusion of AfterLife.
Still it's the final little salute he gives his buddy/coworker that stands out in my mind. However, time passing, people and pets coming and going, is much more realistic.

#8 Tinder Box
LT Early Review
5/5
A mere 995 pages

I simply loved this book. Yes, it is tremendously huge, probably contains more information than the average television viewer needs to know and yes I didn't read it in its entirety but the information it does contain is enlightening and worthy of trivia lovers everywhere. After reading the introductory section on HBO's beginnings I focused on HBO's offerings that I have enjoyed. Soprano's, Sex and the City, Game of Thrones, The Larry Sanders Show, not to mention concerts and Comic Relief.
Remarks from the creators and actors of each show sheds light on just how special HBO is and continues to be. The venue has touched most everyone's lives and is certainly worthy of a look through. You just may find that once you get started, you won't be able to stop.

So did you come away thinking he'd killed himself? That was my initial thought, but neither of us could explain the dog disappearing. Tony wouldn't give the dog away, so we were left with the only conclusion, that of time passing.
I'm sorry that it's the end of the show. He did a great job of walking the line between comedy and sorrow.

>114 Carmenere: I hope you're doing okay!

119Carmenere
Feb 2, 2022, 3:35 pm

>118 mstrust: Well, AfterLife could go either way. I think he gave away the insurance money simply because he didn't want to enjoy it at the cost of his wife's life. However, just to have an uncashed check hanging around is senseless because his wife paid for it with good intentions. She seemed to be the kind of person to want to help others.
The passing of time is most plausible but why the heck the salute! Even is buddy seemed confused about it.
I guess the rest of the story could be written by each of us and I'm apt to choose the happy ending.

The local forecaster got me concerned about the heavy ice and snow on the way and how we should clear decks of snow. I don't recall Bill ever doing that but just in case I took off half the layer that was on the deck which leaves about 3 inches. Hopefully my efforts will help, if not...se la vie. Day 6 of project. Today they are painting the 2nd floor hallway and stripping wallpaper from dining room. I think they'll finish either Wednesday or Thursday.
Over the weekend, I spent a lot of time in the flooring department of Home Depot. I'm favoring carpet for living and dining room and wondering if I should go beige or navy blue. I'm leaning beige as I found a lovely loveseat in navy and thought that might be striking with the khaki walls in living room and the navy 1/2 wall in dining room which is off the living room so you'd see both rooms as the same time. Maybe navy carpet would be too dark.
Foyer, 1/2 bath, laundry room - they're connected so I'm thinking a luxury vinyl tile in a white marbely look which might pick up the countertops in kitchen.
Exciting but a lot of visualization is required.

>154 msf59: Happy Wednesday, Mark! It's going to be a glorious couple of days here. Some trees are budding and crocus are peaking out.
Still on robin watch.
To be honest, I haven't had a lot of time to read a book but I have started The Lincoln Highway and so far it moves quickly. I'm looking forward to diving in again, soon.
------------
I'm rethinking getting new carpet for LR/DR and another style of laminate in the foyer. Nothing, Nothing, absolutely nothing is making my eyes happy. So, I've just emailed my kitchen contractor to see if it's not too late to order the same laminate for the LR/DR/Foyer and laundry room. I've watched many a youtube telling me the days of many different floorings, especially on the first floor, are over.
I'll let you know what they say.

Hi Desperate in Cleveland. Finding it hard to focus on words on a page for a long stretch of time? One of these tricks might help.

Try a book full of visuals, like a graphic novel or a children's picture book.

Try a short work like a novella or short stories. Why not give flash fiction a try?

Revisit an old favorite, maybe from childhood.
Wishing you luck!

A flash fiction collection I read and loved is The Paradise Project. 17 stories, 48 pages total. It's been a while since I've read it, but I believe all of the stories have something to do with gardening. I think it's only available as a Kindle ebook, though.

I think Carrie covered the tricks I use. With non-fiction books, I try to read a chapter a day. I can read on multiple ones at a time that way--and if I decide to read more than one chapter, that's fine. With fiction, Carrie's tricks work best.

I am a great-aunt which to me sounds even older than grandma. My nephew’s wife gave birth to baby boy Landon. Different, but I can’t stop thinking about Michael Landon.

I mentioned to Will when he was home this past weekend that my Chromebook is going to be obsolete in June when it will no longer receive updates. He mentioned I should get a keyboard for my iPad. Great idea! For 100 bucks i have myself an iPad laptop. So much better than any inexpensive laptop I would have picked out.

In anticipation of my family room redo, I removed our old wine cabinets that were attached to the wall and replaced it with a portable wine cart that will live in the family room but I can move it to the kitchen, living room, even onto the deck. :)

Read a little Bowdrie last night and 1/2 a chapter from Under Jerusalem. What a cool place to visit some day.

eBay work today and I just might take my iPad laptop outside to do it. :D

No kidding!? You have a Landon too!? That's awesome!

Yeah, I tried to read something just so I wouldn't lapse into a reading coma.

My husband, Bill, had "inherited", (I say that loosely because that guys wife just wanted them gone so she gave them to Bill, and now I have them and I want them gone too), specialized books on Civil War, WWI, WWII military tactics and such. And on top of that, some are in French or German. The audience for these is relatively small and the best way to move 'em out is to try ebay. It's worked a little.

#10
Winesburg, Ohio
Sherwood Anderson

This was a reread for me and I can honestly say I liked it a wee bit more than the first read. This is partly because of it being a group read and the different observations enriched the reading experience.
It is a book describing small town life from the author's perspective and his perspective often leans toward short stories of despair, lack of communication, misunderstandings and sadness. Some humor is present but in all honesty I am not a fan of Anderson's prose. The lack of dialog made for a sluggish read.
I think to readings of this book are more that enough so if anyone wants my copy, drop me a PM.

Oh! and I finished some books too.

#11 Bowdrie I liked this collection of short stories and the wild wild west.
I brought home a couple in he series but I returned them because although I enjoyed it, I think, I need to space them out as it could get rather repetitive.

#12 Diamond Doris A good beach read, I think. It's fast and fun especially when she becomes an international jewelry thief. It is factual but I really feel like we're not getting the whole story. She start stealing.....no, she says it's taking-not stealing.....in Cleveland, Ohio. Hmm, I never heard of her.

#13 Mostly Void, Partially Stars I love listening to the Welcome to Night Vale podcasts, especially at night when all the lights are out. I can just imagine Cecil Baldwin, Night Vale's radio announcer, who reports on all the weird goings on in this small desert town. I imagine Night Vale is nestled somewhere in the middle of Area 51 where strange phenomenon might exist, a place where radio interns disappear, angels are said to appear, vortex(es) occasionally open, and glow clouds float in the sky.
Well, this book has the script for the first 25 episodes.
It's a hoot because it is so bazaar. Definitely, not for everyone but it is certainly unique and who knows what might go on in the deep dark desert.

194scaifea
Apr 14, 2022, 6:44 am

Morning, Lynda! Yay for a new bathtub! I love the deep ones. One of my favorite things about the apartment I lived in as a grad student was that it had one of those old, claw-footed, massive tubs. I could completely submerge myself and still barely touch the end with my toe! *sigh*

195Carmenere
Apr 15, 2022, 9:25 am

Morning, Amber! The guys finished the tub yesterday and it's been unbearable to have to wait 24 hours till I can dive in. Oooo, I can imagine how relaxing it would be for a hardworking grad student to relax in a claw-footed tub.
I hope soaking in mine, although not a claw-footed tub, will be relaxing and provide me of a good night's sleep.

Speaking of sleep, I woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed at 12:57 AM. Ugh! Lucky me, I saw a bright and shiny full moon. After unable to fall back to sleep I went downstairs and made a glass of chocolate milk. It helped, fell back to sleep and woke up about 8:30. This is just too crazy! Thanks Jennifer for the tip. I really enjoyed this book but it could have just as easily been titled The Rat Pack in Vegas because at least 1/2 of the book is about them.

When I awake at odd hours, I usually pick up my iPad and listen to podcasts or even worse, watch Youtube! The bright light from the iPad is of absolutely no help to me, but the lull of a podcast voice sometimes helps. I've been known to just lay in bed with the lights off and say Hail Mary's until I fall back to sleep. I think the repetition works for me.

>204 DeltaQueen50: I have heard that 3am is the time of spiritual awakening. I don't know. I think it's to make you feel better about it, just like rain on your wedding day is good luck.
I don't want to turn on the lamp because that just signals to me, sleep time is over. I read before I fall asleep, which I have no problem doing but staying asleep is a sticky wicket. I still subscribe to chocolate milk but even that is an iffy solution.
Good luck, Judy, I hope we both find the perfect medium to sleep like we were in our 20's.

Re: sleep. I almost feel like an expert as I had insomnia from childhood for decades, so have gathered all the tips that you've likely heard.
Have you tried scenting your bedroom? Lavender is the most common bed linen scent, and you can find lavender skin rubs too. I don't know why, but I seem to sleep more deeply with a cranberry scented wallflower.
If you haven't tried it, 3mg of melatonin really works, or a sleepy time tea. I've even conked out after eating fresh lavender cookies.

#15 The Great Glowing Coils of the Universe
This is volume 2 of the actual scripts from the Welcome To Night Vale Podcast.
The weirdness that is Night Vale, desert town, continues with further unexplained occurrences, once again, reported by Night Vale's broadcaster, Cecil Baldwin. He notifies his audience of the other worldly occurrences going on in his customary deadpan fashion while also giving updates on his scientist crush, Carlos.
Not for everyone but to me certainly a fun read.

I've heard of others who don't get any help from melatonin. You might look for the Zzzquil liquid or gummies, I've tried them both and had good results, but I should mention that I have stronger than average reactions to pretty much any meds. Dramamine practically makes me catatonic.
Zzzquil's gummies have melatonin, chamomile and valerian in them, so you may have better results than just melatonin.
God, I sound like a pusher. These are things I've tried over decades, not weeks!

Corinne Gaffner Garcia
2019

This book was a community read for my county library and I’m glad I read it. If you’re a nature lover you too will enjoy this book of quotes regarding Adventure, Conservation, Reflection and Call of the Wild.
Naturalists include Emerson, Thoreau, Abbey, Muir
Authors: Cormac McCarthy, Krakauer, Murakami, Shakespeare and Dr. Seuss
Also quotes from Teddy Roosevelt and various sages.
It’s a great book for someone fighting a book slump or another who just wants to experience the beauty of natures without stepping out of your house.

#17 The Four Agreements
Don Miguel Ruiz
2 stars/5

Ok, I'm sure there are some people that found this book, enlightening, thought provoking, mindful, whatever. If so, then I'm glad you got something out of this book.
As for me, I thought it trivial, juvenile, full of conjecture and suspicious. Ruiz, comments on Toltec practices but never sites where he got this information. It seemed to me he rambled on with what he seemed to think the 4 agreements ought to be and how they should be practiced.
The context is 168 pages, double spaced. Was 80 pages single spaced too small for the publisher to consider. I'm not clear as to the audience might be for this book. I scratch my head in befuddlement. 10 years on the NYT best seller list? If this is how self-help books are written, I'm sure I can do it too. I left it at the pool hoping someone will gravitate to it at just the right time in their life.
