Welcome, Inver. Favourite Alice Hoffman book? What else do you read?

Hi, I would like to join , too! I admit I haven't read too much of her stuff but what I have read I like. Practical Magic was a good movie, Aquamarine was cute, and they both had good messages behind them. But I am mostly impressed with her website, she seems like a very down to earth person. I have to see what I may have read by her, because something drew me to her website in the first place, so I'll get back to you on that. I like the smallness of this group, someof theothers are so big that they are ot personal enough. Sometimes I feel like a big BABY honestly, when everybody greets the new members and I'm one of the people who gets neglected, even though I know it is probably totally unintentional. That happened in the LTers with dogs site. I felt tlike the only person that was not acknowleged. Probably just an oversight. Anyway, hopefully I will have something insightful to say about AH. Ihave to see what books of hers I have. I think she is going to be at the Festival in NYC this summer as a guest speaker which I was hoping to get to until business got a bit slow and now I can't afford it, so that's what I think got me thinking on her. Welcome to Fans of Alice Hoffman, Mary Beth; it's nice to have you here. Too bad you won't be able to see her at the festival. I wonder if that's one of the book festivals that's televised on BookTV on C-Span2 ? If so , maybe it would be possible to see her that way. I know I'd enjoy it.

Hi Mary Beth and welcome. I've only read two of Alice Hoffman's books and seen one movie but there's something about her books that intrigues me. She doesn't appear to be too popular down here in Australia - with all three of the libraries I belong to having multiple copies of Probable Future and not much else by her.

What's BookTV Emma? It sounds great. We have a monthly Book Club show on our national public TV station - and it's only 1/2 hr long.

I just picked up The River King for 50 cents at my local library. I have been on a buying frenzy. My two local libraries have free shelves and not so free shelves. 50 cents for hardcovers and 25 cents for paperbacks or 2 for 35 cents. I have gotten some fantastic books lately. I buy more books when I am stressed. I guess it could be worse. It could be booze, drugs or shoes, right. Well, I think I'll hunt down The River King. Oh, to be Alice Hoffman with all these movies made from my books. I can't even imagine. Did I mention I'm a writer? Lots of excuses not to write though, you know, like, I'm too stressed. Actually, a local event has given me a great idea. Dreadful news story, though. Some mutilated animals found in an abandoned house. Got me to thinking. How does something like that come about, and go unnoticed, I mean there were alot of animals, of all kinds in there. How did that happen without anybody hearing or seeing anything? Well, on that note, I'm off to bed, to lie awake, clutching my quilt under my chin, with thick socks so something doesn't get my toes. They are so far away down there at the end of the bed...

Book TV is a continuous weekend broadcast on C-Span2, a cable channel in the US. The channel breaks away from it's usual public affairs programming from from Friday night till early Monday morning. It's all about books and authors,and it primarily, but not exclusively deals with non -fiction. They'll have interviews and taped appearances by authors at bookstores, that kind of thing. Also whenever there is a big book festival , they'll televise a lot of it. Panel discussions, seminars, etc. That's where I've seen most of the ficton authors.
There was a great panel discussion one time which included Dave Barry and Amy Tan. Not sure you could get it where you are, social pages. :(

Sounds like a great concept and good way to spend a weekend. Amy Tan is one of my favourite authors.

I have quite a few favourites, but my favourite reads are always family/friends/relationship kind of reads. Thanks for the welcome by the way.

Do we have a leader in this group? I guess I will have to go back through all of the posts to see who started it. A HUGE thank you from me to whoever you are. Alice Hoffman is my favorite female author. Now if I can just find a John Steinbeck group, I will be all set.
