I'm in again! Winter weather headed our way Sunday, so it should be a good day to stay in and read.
3benitastrnad
I will be joining again this weekend. I am getting my COVID booster shot tomorrow and so might be spending a day in bed. If that is the case, there is nothing better to do except sleep and read.
7PawsforThought
I'll do my best to join in. My nephew's coming over this weekend, but not *all* weekend so I should be able to have at least some time to read, but we'll see how much it ends up being (I'm not known for getting reading done even on nephew-free weekends).
8thornton37814
We have sleet and snow in the forecast too. I will finish at least one book and perhaps another. My problem is that I get distracted when I begin cross stitching or doing genealogical research. I'll try to focus on blending them a little better this weekend.

I'm in.
Also expecting that same winter weather on Sun. I'll be here by the fire with cat and pile of books.
Books:
About to finish Wild Rover No More: Being the Last Recorded Account of the Life & Times of Jacky Faber and
The True Story of Christmas by Anne Fine.
Just started The School of Essential Ingredients, Erica Bauermeister.
sunny, 43 F. (6 C.) in Charlotte at 10a.

I'm in. Currently reading Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carre, and The Innocence of Father Brown by G.K. Chesterton.
Portland, Oregon is having an unusually warm, mostly sunny January weekend - daytime highs at about 50. The wife is working (urgent care nurse) this weekend, so I should get a decent amount of reading in.

Planning on joining. We've got winter weather predicted for Sunday, and I'm home on Monday. What to read, aye, there's the rub.
13elkiedee
I'm planning to join in and maybe hoping to finish a book, but more importantly, to actually post on the Readathon thread - I've been reading but not posting on the last two!
14PawsforThought
>11 ChrisG1: Ooh, nice! I want to do a re-read of the Karla trilogy some day. And I’ve been meaning to get to the Father Brown books. Again, some day.
15Carmenere
My calendar is clear for the entire weekend so I'm in! I'll be finishing up The Frozen Thames, Give Unto Others (I had put that on the back burner) and listen to An American Tragedy and possible read from my longer projects Under Jerusalem and Tinderbox: HBO's Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers
16cbl_tn
My priorities for the weekend are to finish Last Train to Istanbul (almost un-put-downable now after a slowish start), make good progress on and maybe finish the audio of The Resistance Man (I need to do a lot of cleaning tomorrow, so maybe a motivation to keep cleaning!), and read The Sign of Four as well as a Sherlock Holmes short story. (I think The Adventure of the Norwood Builder may be next up, and I'll listen to it on LibriVox.) If I get all that done, I'll start on Inheritance.

Saturday morning here - I've been reading The island of the Missing Trees and hope to finish today, only 50 odd pages left which I tried to get through late last night but fell asleep instead.
Just been for a drive to the city centre and picked up a latte on the way home.
We have a lot of stuffed peppers in the fridge, but I'll also be making meatballs for tonight's dinner.
I'm also reading a little from Dr Faustus by Thomas Mann & need to read a couple of graphic novels about WW1 so they can return to the library.

We're supposed to get anywhere from 15-40cm of snow so I'm planning to stay inside and do a bit of reading.
Right now I'm reading Weather by Jenny Offill. Seemed fitting.

Friday evening
Books:
Just finished The True Story of Christmas by Anne Fine, moments ago. Very funny!
3/4 way through Wild Rover No More: Being the Last Recorded Account of the Life & Times of Jacky Faber,
my current audio book, also funny. I can make a good dent in that when I take my long evening walk later.
In addition to The School of Essential Ingredients, Erica Bauermeister, I also started
Beyond the Bright Sea by Lauren Wolk.
Dinner soon: great leftover meatloaf and steamed vegetables; a little popcorn earlier.
I'm trying to stick to my New Year's goal to get fit & trim!

I'm back, reading to avoid indoor frostbite in midst of cold snap.
Listening to Only the Rich Can Play by David Wessel; I'll find some other books on my Kindle to read. I also have A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins to read & return to the Providence Athenaeum.

Friday night update
Books Read From: Unwarrented: Policing Without Permission by Barry Feldman. We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry. Most of my reading today has been in Resistance Man by Martin Walker. I am listening to Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.
Books finished in this week's Readathon: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal
Time reading: 1 hour at lunch and 1 hour this evening.
Time posting:
Food: I had a burrito from a quasi Mexican take-out joint.
Thoughts: I finished Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows and really liked this novel. It is for one of my real life book clubs and I think this is going to be a good discussion. There is lots to talk about in this book regarding culture and immigration issues. I got totally caught up in Resistance Man by Martin Walker and read half of the book in the last two days. I really like these Bruno, Chief of Police books.
Like others in this group I have Monday off for MLK Day so will be posting my reading through Monday night.
Total books finished since the read-a-thon began: 195
Total time reading for the Read-A-Thon since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 518 hours since April 2020 when I signed up for my first weekend readathon

Friday overnight/early Saturday a.m. update
Books read from: The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz, Only the Rich Can Play by David Wessel
Books finished: The Plot
Time reading: 3 hours??
Time posting: none
Snacks: strawberries
Thoughts: It's cold outside. I wish I could sleep through the night.
Non-book activities: Watching the movie crew put up and take down the set for a shoot literally on my front porch and outside. They'll repeat this tomorrow (high winds made shooting impossible today). Took delivery of big gift of kitty litter from my friend Rita. Took Minka to the vet (no problems with her right front paw, I suspect the vet thinks she's a drama queen...)

I forgot to include an audiobook in last night's report, so I added that in. I've already read a bit this morning, but I'll include it with a bigger update this evening. I've got a couple of chores to run before the winter weather system arrives, so I'd better get ready and head out to run those. Hopefully I'll be back in a hour to hour and a half once I leave the house.

Friday reading:
A very slow start in terms of reading
Books read from: Five Children and It, Empire of Pain
Books finished: none
Pages read: 40 and one chapter of audiobook
Time reading: About an hour and a half
Dinner: sushi
Thoughts: My college-age daughter, who is supposed to head back to school on a flight Monday morning, just learned that a friend she spent time with on Thursday evening got a positive COVID test back on Friday. We are not sure what to do--she needs a negative test to return to campus, but a test taken now probably won't pick up so recent an exposure. She really wants to leave, but I think she's going to have to stay here.
Non-book activities: work, catching up on threads, dinner, difficult conversation with daughter (not about COVID), Azul, Wordle

Food: coffee and a radish sandwich for breakfast
Thoughts: I intend to do some errands this morning and then stay inside cooking today. I am going to try a new recipe and that will be exciting. I am looking foward to a three day weekend becuase I will be doing lots of teaching in the next two weeks and will be exhausted and probably too tired to do much reading. Sounds exciting to have so much going on right outside your door! I heard about the sequel to this movie on a TV interview with Bette Midler before Christmas. The interview made it sound like the movie was almost done. Your observations make me believe that it might not be ready to release on Halloween of 2022. Keep us updated on the progress outside.

Saturday night update:
Movie shooting update: They are about to roll the cameras now; it's bloody freezing outside. Went out to take out garbage and take pics for my landlady (who is more excited than I am, but who is in Boston) and discovered that the production designer and I have a close mutual friend -- and we're both Canadian expats. So I helped him with the final prep bits (including opening soda cans to stop them exploding mid-scene. I have now retreated inside. When the cameras start rolling, Bette Middler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy WILL be ambling down the street in front of my house but I will not be watching out the window. I have posted some pics on FB and will try to find a way to post them here (of the set-up/scene). Benita, the release date is pretty firm. They are in the final stages of filming now.
Book update!
Books read from since last update: Only the Rich Can Play by David Wessel, Acts and Omissions by Catherine Fox, Three Debts Paid by Anne Perry
Books finished: none yet
Time reading: 4 hours
Time posting: 20 mins?
Snacks: sandwiches for 'lunch'
Thoughts: I think the rest of the world is MUCH more excited than I am about celebrities. I'm more interested in all the background work.
Non-book activities: Trying to figure out WTH happened to the Amazon package that was delivered and mysteriously replaced by... a planter full of fake mums by the movie guys. None of whom admit to having seen the box. Snoozing. Dealing with stuff for my father.

Movie shooting update: They have finished! Didn't start shooting until about 11 p.m., by which time I was tucked up in bed. I went to the front window, and all I saw was Sarah Jessica Parker stomping up and down impatiently, trying to keep warm in between run-throughs. I went back to bed. Then I overheard some extras gossiping outside my bedroom window. FINALLY, there was a lot of noise, and they got a good version on camera and promptly all the big lights were turned off and people vanished to the warmth. Tomorrow, they'll break it all down.

I had planned to do Zoom church this morning because of the wintry mix in the forecast. However, my power went out shortly before 9:30 and didn't come back on until about 20 minutes ago. I hadn't charged my phone last night and I didn't want to use battery power for reading an ebook, so I picked up Inheritance and read the first several chapters. Now that the power is back on I can switch to my ebook.

I get tired of the hullabaloo that surrounds the football games. It blocks traffic and makes it almost impossible to get around to do the normal things of life - like get groceries. Every football weekend at the grocery store is like the few days right in front of a major holiday. It gets tiring so I understand that aspect. I also don't care much about celebreties. I know that football and basketball stars come into the library from time-to-time, but I don't know who they are. To me they are just another student who needs help finding resources. It is only afterwards when other students tell me with awe "that person was ---" that I even know about it.

Books Read From: Unwarrented: Policing Without Permission by Barry Friedman. We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry. Most of my reading today has been in Resistance Man by Martin Walker. I am listening to Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.
Books finished in this week's Readathon: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal Resistance Man by Martin Walker
Time reading: 4 hours
Time posting:
Food: indian takeout food for lunch. chips and salsa for supper.
Thoughts: I spent most of Saturday afternoon and night in bed fighting the affects of the COVID booster shot. I had really bad chills. This problem was compounded by the fact that it was cold and rainy down here. High temperature yesterday was 48 and today it only got up to 49. It was a good weekend to spend in bed and I did! I read an entire book this weekend. Resistance Man. I started it on Thursday and finished it this morning. It was the perfect cold weather book. Books Read From: Unwarrented: Policing Without Permission by Barry Friedman. We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry is my at work book. Honey Bus by Meredith May. I am listening to Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness.
Books finished in this week's Readathon: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. Resistance Man by Martin Walker
Time reading: .5 hours this morning.
Time posting:
Food: bread butter and radish sandwich for breakfast
Activities Other Than Reading: I am making a quick trip to Birmingham this morning to pick up some book boxes from another librarian friend. I have run out of shelf space in my house and need to pack up the books I have accumulated in the last two years. They are turning my home office into an unsuable space becuase they are piled on the floor. Time to clean up and organize a bit.
Thoughts: After finishing Resistance Man I was looking around for a lighter read but didn't want to get out of bed to find one. My eyes lit upon Honey Bus and I started, once again, reading in it. It is a good memoir and I can't wait to get to the bees part. I already found out about the Honey Bus. I intend to do some more reading this afternoon and get started on sending out my Christmas epistle. I left my address book here in Alabama when I went home for Christmas and so didn't get my letter sent before Christmas. I want to get them out before January ends.

Sunny and 36 F. (2 C.) in Charlotte this morning. Snow and ice will start to melt today.
Books:
So many good ones to choose from I hardly know what to read next.
I'm enjoying these kids books -
The Complete Brambly Hedge and the fantasy adventure Sky Raiders.
I also started Pastoral, historical fiction by Nevil Shute; so far there's too much fishing detail . .
I have new audio books from which to pick. I think I'll start with The Sentinel, the newest Jack Reacher adventure by Lee Child.
Breakfast - not yet
Dinner last night was Tuscan fish stew.
Other activity:
I have laundry and tidying to do today; other than that, I plan to read all day.
Watched PBS last night, Around the World in 80 Days and All Creatures Great and Small

Monday evening and last update for this Readathon
Books Read From: A small bit in Unwarrented: Policing Without Permission by Barry Friedman. Nothing today in We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry since it is my at work book. Honey Bus by Meredith May. I finished listening to Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness and started listening to Spy Who Was Left Behind by Michael Pullara.
Books finished in this week's Readathon: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. Resistance Man by Martin Walker. Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness
Time reading: 1 hour this afternoon and that was listening time.
Time posting:
Food: sandwich for lunch
Activities Other Than Reading: Made my trip to Birmingham and picked up the boxes. Stopped at Target and got my coffee filters. Now I can organize and I can make coffee this next week. Stripped the bed and washed the sheets and then made the bed.
Thoughts: Knife of Never Letting Go was a surprise. It has a very pointed message about what makes a young boy into a man. The narrator did a very good job with a difficult text and made it quite understandable. I did refer to the printed book and thought that the publisher and the author did a great job with the alternate text done in different size and style of text font. It made it very easy for the reader/listener to figure out what was going on in the book. I give this book high marks for a good quality recorded version of a printed book. From what I hear the movie wasn't very well done so maybe for those who aren't inclined to read it would be a good book for them to listen to.
Total books finished since the read-a-thon began: 195
Total time reading for the Read-A-Thon since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 526 hours since April 2020 when I signed up for my first weekend Readathon.

>1 SilverWolf28: hope you'll be setting up a thread for this weekend.
Starting this evening the weather forecast is sleet and freezing rain, which will keep me inside except to top off the birdfeeders in the morning and as needed...
