Spoilers ahead: I read it years ago in class, I think it's a classic.
The village has no written records so a child that was chosen to be the 'chronicler' or 'archivist' since they were born keeps track of everything. Eventually, a new 'chronicler' is born and the village sacrificies the old one so they can start anew (I remember it mentions that all fights are forgotten, all things forgiven, since no one 'remembers' them).
I don't think there was magic in the story, and the last chronicler does die.

Are you thinking of The Giver by Lois Lowry?

>2 saskia17: No, sorry.
But I did find the story! It's "The Memory Priest of the Creech People", still, thanks for replying :D
