My memory is hazy but I will recall what I can.
- Fiction
- Read the book in 2nd grade (around 2006) from a small town school library in Iowa, it was a plain white/grey hardback and if I had to guess roughly 150-250 pages thick. The cover pamphlet had been gone and it had seemed aged, given time frame I'd guess it was probably written pre-2000's.
- The opening of the book is in a wolf cave near a large lake and the wolf gives birth to a litter of pups, one is born in a sac and I remember a detailed description of the mother wolf eating the sac to support the others. I don't recall much of the overall plot, except that it seemed like a hyper-realistic wolf pov story about them trying to survive (I think over the course of a year) and that the ending was very sad, it had brought me to tears and I can still remember the heart-wrench even after all these years.
- (Edit - Later detail recalled) I've also recalled another detail I think, in that towards midway or the end at some point a human decides to put poison into one of his livestock that was dead or killed so that when the predator came back to eat it, they were poisoned and killed.
This book has branded itself in my memory and I've been searching for years with no luck so anything would be appreciated.
I should mention that although I read it in 2nd grade I do not believe it was a children's book, though I could not say what the intended audience was.
I wish I had more. Hopefully this will jog someone's memory or mind - I'll take any hint of suggestion at this point.
Thanks in advance.

>1 WhiteRaven.17: Is it possibly Runt? I haven't read it in a while, so I can't attest to all the details, but it came out in 2002, and you could find it in every school library for a while.

>2 bookel: Thank you - I will definitely scour over that list. For some odd reason the word 'silver' has always stuck out in my memory so I'm going to look into finding the book called 'Silver Wolf' on that list - see if there's anything more concrete to it. If that's not it I'll try that other site. Much appreciated.

>3 RosetheReader: You are not the first to suggest this. My friend actually bought that book for me a year or two ago thinking that might be it as well. The book I read was quite a bit thicker than Runt is, but thank you for the suggestion, it's appreciated.

I'm pretty sure this is Julie of the Wolves or Julie's Wolf Pack. There's a female wolf named Silver, and the sac thing seems very familiar. I recently read these with my daughter.

>7 SJaneDoe: Wow, I think it might actually be Julie's Wolf Pack. I know it was definitely told from a wolf's pov. I always thought it was a female wolf named Silver and when I looked up a quick summary on Wikipedia it says she has weak pups and on the verge of hunger and a lot of the other wolf names sounded familiar, especially Raw Bones. I definitely want to get my hands on a copy of the book to verify, but I think you may have hit it. You have no idea how incredibly grateful I am - this book has plagued my memory for two decades now, so thank you!

Okay, I know it's been a while but I ordered all three books in the Julie of the Wolves series and finally was able to read them and just finished the last book. I can confirm now that that is not the book I was looking for. It was a wonderful series and a pleasure to read, but not the one plaguing my memory unfortunately. Also I think the book I'm looking for was thicker than Julie's Wolf Pack.
I've also recalled another detail I think, in that towards midway or the end at some point a human decides to put poison into one of his livestock that was dead or killed so that when the predator came back to eat it, they were poisoned and killed.
I'll keep digging and looking.

Some suggestions- these are all realistic stories showing the life of wolves:
The Wolf by Dr Michael Fox
Cry Wild by R.D. Lawrence
The Custer Wolf by Roger Caras
Short story "Lobo" by Ernest Thompson Seton- it's found in 2 collections that I know of, Wild Animals I Have Known and Lobo, Rags and Vixen. This one the female of a wolf pair gets poisoned at the end of the story, to protect livestock.
I read a lot of animal stories. If I think of any others, I'll let you know.

>11 jeane: Thank you! I will look through all those options. The Wolf is the first one I will look into as that cover art and design look extremely familiar, see if I can find a synopsis or get a hold of a copy anywhere.

My copy of The Wolf arrived today and without needing to read it I can confirm that it's the book I've been looking for. The artwork was immediately familiar, one of the first pages has artwork of wolves by a big lake like I remember and the main female wolf is named Silver, which I had thought.
Funny how different it is in some aspects of my memory and right on in other areas.
Really appreciate all the help I had with this one! Thank you.
