Title: pretty sure it has the word “magician” in it
Plot: though I’m almost certain the title has the word “magician” in it, it doesn’t have “magic” in it like Harry Potter. The book takes place in a different universe though everyone is human. The main character is a woman whose country is at war (I don’t remember with whom). I remember zeppelins (blimps) being in the book. The woman is a scientist and has found this brass, steampunk, orb thing in the home of another (dead?) scientist. The book follows her figuring out the orb has a sentient magic inside it and can open portals (like stargates). She goes to a different world where she falls in love with a local. Though they don’t speak the same language, after both she and this man fall into a tub of water together, with the orb, the orb’s magic allows them to speak/understand each other’s language. I remember this man’s world being in a time that reminded me of Earth’s (England’s) medieval time period. The woman’s (main character) home planet reminded me of a combination of England circa WWII era and a splash of steampunk.
I know the book is inspired by the Stargate series because I remember visiting the author’s website at one point and reading that she was inspired by that series.

Some details are wrong, but I'm pretty sure you're referencing Martha Wells' trilogy of The Fall of Ile-Rien. First book of the trilogy is The Wizard Hunters. There are 5 novels and a book of short stories in the series. The trilogy is the end of the series.
