I read this fictional novel the first time probably around 20-40 years ago. I thought it was called The Doll House; but I was not able to find it under that title.

The last two lines below were the most impactful of the story.

It is about a woman and her family that live in a rural setting. (Appalachian mountains?) Her husband and son move to the city to get work. She and her young daughter stay in the old home for a time.

I believe they move to the city too. Husband and son love the city and keep trying to get her to make cheep dolls. She resists because she has a dream of buying some land or business near her home and moving back there. To that end she has managed to save money that her husband doesnt know about

Her daughter gets hit by a train and dies. (That is when you find out about the money.) In her grief, she locks herself in a room and carves an amazing carving of a face that is not totally revealed.

Once the carving is done, (I believe some other character in the story that is not family sees it) She takes an axe and cuts it into pieces to start making cheep dolls. She has no more dreams.
