I will participate this weekend. I plan on staying home and finishing up my planting. I am going to have to go out and purchase a pot or two as I don't have any in which to put a few of my plants. It will be hot here so it will be a good weekend to stay at home and be inside. Oh - I also plan on cleaning out my refrigerator.

Friday evening posting:
Books Read From: Another page or two in Unwarranted: Policing Without Permission by Barry Friedman. I am deep into reading Broken For You by Stephanie Kallos and am enjoying this novel and now have a good start in Sisters of the Resistance by Christine Wells. I am still listening to Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness. This is book 3 in the Chaos Walking series.
Books finished in this week's Readathon: The End: The Defiance and Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1944-1945 by Ian Kershaw on Thursday.
Book Thoughts: I finished The End and found this book to be very enlightening. This was not a military history but it had lots in it about the generals and why they made the decisions that they did. This book had 165 pages of notes, references, and index at the end of the book, so even though it looked intimidating it was not that lengthy of a tome and it read quite well. I read this one for the LT Nonfiction Challenge. This month the category was War and Peace with readers to concentrate on the runup to war and the aftermath. This wasn't quite the aftermath, but it did explain why the ending of World War II was so excruciatingly lengthy. The author attributes that long drawn out bloody ending to one man - Adolf Hitler. Because of the way it was written it was not hard to read and I am sure that this is going to be one of my top 2022 reads. I am sure that the numbers of my recorded books listened to is going to drop. Gas is $4.29 a gallon here so that is going to curtail my driving. I will probably only listen while doing a few errands and that will make getting through the books slower.
Time reading: 1 hour this evening and 1/2 hour at lunch.
Time posting:1 hour.
Food: I stopped and picked up a falafel sandwich. I am going to make bread tonight in my bread machine. It is too hot here to crank up the stove and bake bread the old fashioned way. Tomorrow I will clean out my refrigerator. I have been wanting to do that for a few weeks and tomorrow is it. I am also going to try to get some ham and beans put into the crock pot tomorrow as well.
Nonbook activities: Non today and I have a cleaning day lined up for tomorrow. Plus I need to go look for a couple of more pots in which to plant the remaining plants I have.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 231
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 610 hours since I started participating in the Read-A-Thon that started in April 2020.

Friday night in Seattle:
Books read from: Legends & Lattes
Books finished: none
Time reading: 1 hour
Time posting: 9:50 PM
Snacks: Pasta & potatoes for dinner
Thoughts: I hope my weekend improves from here. My husband called from our local grocery store while he was out running some errands this afternoon to say the car wouldn't start. We called AAA, assuming it would be the battery, but instead it looks to be the starter. So it's now been towed to our local mechanic's shop, where they hope to be able to fix it by midweek. We're trying to rent a car, but none of the local places have anything available for pickup on Saturday. Fortunately, living in the city as we do, we can walk for some things and have most other things we might need delivered, but it's still frustrating, and there's the nagging stress of hoping the car repair will be simple and straightforward and isn't a sign that the car is starting to fall apart (it's very low mileage, but it's also 11 years old) because what with inflation and interest rates rising and supply chain problems, I do NOT want to have to replace it anytime soon.
Non-book activities: Work, laundry, cooking, trying to find a car to rent

Books finished: Black Birds in the Sky
Pages read: 52 pages and 1 chapter audiobook
Time reading: 1 hour reading and 1 hour listening

Thoughts: My reading has me once again thinking about the poor quality of the history I was taught in school, and wondering how likely it is that it will get better for today's children. I'd say unlikely.

Saturday aftetrnoon posting:
Books Read From: One page in Unwarranted: Policing Without Permission by Barry Friedman. I am deep into reading Sisters of the Resistance by Christine Wells. I started reading Tilted World by Tom Franklin. I am still listening to Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness but not getting much done in it this weekend because I am not driving much due to gasoline prices. This is book 3 in the Chaos Walking series.
Books finished in this week's Readathon: Broken For You by Stephanie Kallos. The End: The Defiance and Destruction of Hitler's Germany, 1944-1945 by Ian Kershaw on Thursday.
Book Thoughts: I slept in this morning and then when I got up I made coffee and sat in my favorite reading chair and read for 3 hours. I finished reading Broken For You and I found it to be an unexpected pleasure to read. This is now on my list of top reads of the year. This is a great story but it is also well written. The author says that it took her 7 years to write it and all that hard work shows. This is the kind of reading experience I live for. I started Tilted World by the well respected Southern author Tom Franklin this afternoon. It is for one of my book discussion groups. I have only about 5 pages but it sounds like it is going to be a good book, as well. I have high hope for it and only hope that I have not set the bar too high.
Time reading: 3 hours this morning.
Time posting:1 hour. LT has been really slow this afternoon.
Food: I baked a loaf of bread in the bread machine last night and had a sandwich made from it for lunch today. It tasted good. This afternoon I will bake oatmeal raisin cookies again (still have all those raisins to use up) and will make some potato salad. But first I have to go grocery shopping.
Nonbook activities: I did one load of wash and planted one plant today. It is so hot here. It is up in the 90's and miserable outside. It is to rain tomorrow so I will do my planned chores tomorrow. Right now I am going to get ready to go to the swimming pool and do more reading. When I get home I will go get groceries and bake those cookies. By that time it will be cooler and not so much of a strain on my AC.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 232
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 613 hours since I started participating in the Read-A-Thon that started in April 2020.

Books read from: Legends & Lattes
Books finished: Legends & Lattes
Time reading: 3 hours
Time posting: 3:15 PM
Snacks: BBQ sandwich for lunch
Thoughts: The local Hertz place had a no-show, so we were able to pick up a substitute car for while ours is in the shop after all. Also, it's a perfectly beautiful day, sunny and mid-60's, which in Seattle in the springtime means shorts weather. All our doors and windows are open, and I hear lawnmowers and weed eaters in every direction.
Nonbook activities: Walked to the library, which I think I'll keep doing in nice weather even when I do have a car. Writing, laundry.

>15 alcottacre: I agree, Stasia. I thought Black Birds in the Sky was quite good. I don't think I entirely realized that it was targeted at younger readers--that probably explains why it was relatively short. I picked up the audiobook in an Audible promotion without a lot of information, (and it nicely fit the flying animals challenge this month). I'm actually glad to know the target audience is middle grade students--this is exactly the historical context I feel like I missed out on. I recently had a conversation with a friend who grew up in Tulsa in the 1970s, and similarly knew nothing about Greenwood or the 1921 race massacre until recently. It's a disturbing story, but one we should know.

>23 AnneDC: I read another young adult book (Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham) about it a couple of years ago, Anne, or I would likely still have known nothing about the Tulsa Race Riot either. The Latham book is fiction though as opposed to Colbert's nonfiction young adult book on the subject.

Monday morning summary:
Books read from: Bleak House by Charles Dickens, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, Last Call by Tim Powers, The Poetry of John Donne, The Confessions of St. Augustine
Books finished: A Wrinkle in Time - I'm afraid I bailed 30 pages into Bleak House...just wasn't in the mood for a 1000 page plow through Dickens.
Non-book activities: the wife & I binge-watched the new Open Range TV series on Prime Video - very strange...think Yellowstone crossed with Stranger Things. Quite entertaining.
Pages read: 320
