Read this about 11 years ago in 2011. The only thing I remember from the title is that beneath the actual title it had the word annals in it. The book is about a kid the king brings into his court. I think it was his illegitimate son. The king has at least two legitimate children. One male one female. The book switches POV between the kid and a man who is in the northern region and associated with the winter court. The princess was betrothed but she liked the boy and slept with him. If I remember correctly he didn’t reciprocate the feelings so the princess accused him of having nonconsensual relations with her. We find out at this point that the two POVs are of the same character. At the end he comes back down as a general for the winter court and fights against the prince he grew up with.

Is it possibly The Dog of the North: The Annals of Mondia by Tim Stretton?
