I read this some time in the 80’s
There was a teenage orphaned girl fighting cancer in the hospital and she got a roommate, young girl who’s mom and a guy ( last name I think was Sykes or some variant ) died in a car crash she was in. The two of them get fostered with someone from the hospital and the kid goes a little weird.
I remember the teenager visiting her old orphanage with a doctor.
I also remember her meeting a boy at some point who got her a small blown glass duck.
I think the little girls fathers name was Gordon Peter gambrel or some variant…
All the details I remember are random and vague .
