Tomorrow is Midsummer so I doubt I will get much reading done, but the rest of the weekend should make up for it.

I’ll be starting my “summer of horror” by reading Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Other Stories, and balancing that by trying to finish Diana Wynne Jones’ Castle in the Air and Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies.

I'll join in. It's a long weekend here in New Zealand as we have our first official public holiday for Matariki today - basically celebrates the arrival in the night sky of the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, in Japan this cluster goes by the name Subaru. Matariki is a fairly recent event, I hadn't heard of it until about 10 years ago when a few children's books suddenly appeared with stories around families celebrating the Maori new year.

'm hoping to finish Love and Longing in Bombay by Vikram Chandra, I'm on the last story now. Also have been listening to a gripping scifi adventure, the third book in the Revenger trilogy, Bone Silence by Alastair Reynolds.

I'd forgotten about readathons but hope to join in. I've finished 4 books in the last few days so have just begun several new ones etc, but there is at least one possible further book that I'll finish quite soon.

Count me in. I'll be busy most of Saturday but hope to sneak in a little reading anyway. I hope to finish War: How Conflict Shaped Us, When We Cease to Understand the World, and The Gurkha's Daughter. I have Elegy for Eddie to listen to in the car, and I hope to read a good chunk of Violeta as I think the library wants it back very soon.

Saturday's Friday Night Update:

Books read from: Welcome to Night Vale.
Time Reading: 1 1/2 hours

Thoughts: I like how the author of Welcome to Night Vale writes. He puts out a weird, nonsensical sentence and then goes back to that thought in a later chapter and you can't help but snicker. It's like you're in on the joke.

Sorry! I have been reading but completely forgot to post! I’ve made it most of the way through Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery and Other Stories, which was a very good choice of book for this weekend as it’s scorching and very difficult to concentrate so a short stories is perfect. And Jackson’s a great writer. Hoping to finish the book today

Sorry not to get round to posting before but I had a quiet but surprisingly productive reading weekend. I dropped out of these threads due to my sight problems in the spring, and have since remembered how much I struggled with some books before I realised I had a more serious issue than needing new glasses. I think that was starting to slow me down! I now have one good eye post cataract surgery, and have a check up/follow up appointment on Thursday (this has taken longer than referral to initial appointment or first appt to surgery). Hopefully then my right eye will also then be scheduled for treatment.

From Friday afternoon (about 3 pm) to midnight on Sunday. I would have read a bit longer, but just ended up going to sleep.

Books read from: 12
Rachel Hore, One Moonlit Night - FINISHED 26.06.22
Kate Atkinson, Shrines of Gaiety - STARTED 26.06.22
Sarah Winman, Still Life - FINISHED 27.06.22
Denise Mina, Rizzio - FINISHED 27.06.22
Ruth Thomas, Snow and the Works on the Northern Line
Elizabeth Hay, A Student of Weather
Caroline O'Donoghue, Promising Young Women
Lara Feigel, Free Woman: Life, Liberation and Doris Lessing
Rupa Sepetys, The Fountains of Silence
Stuart Turley, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
Otto Penzler & Lee Child (selection/editor), Best Crime Stories of the Year: 2021
Stacey Halls, Mrs England

Books finished: 1 at the weekend, 2 today (having reached the last few pages over the weekend)
Thoughts: Just appreciating the restoration of sight in one eye
Non-book activities: Last weekend was a bit hectic - this weekend I just read a lot and posted on social media, and went out for half an hour or so for an update on developments in my local park friends group (when I say local I mean literally 2 mins from my front door!)
