I'm in again.
A long Holiday weekend! Hurray!
Sadly, I have some oral surgery first thing Friday morning, but expect to bounce back immediately.
Besides reading, I'll be getting ready to leave town on Tue for the long-awaited cousin reunion in Illinois.
I have spent today choosing music and working on the memorial for my mother.
Book:
Just about done with If the creek don't rise by Leah Weiss, set in the NC mountains, 50 years ago.

I'm in again, it's already Friday afternoon here in Auckland, New Zealand. I'm currently reading Thraxas and the dance of death, #6 in a pulp fantasy series that I enjoy from time to time.
Listening to scifi, Bone Silence, very exciting last book in the trilogy.
Have several other books that I'm reading.

I'm in! I was supposed to go camping this weekend, but we have two people with fevers, so it's a weekend at home.

I'm in - I'm in the UK but will go from some time this afternoon through to Monday anyway. I finished another book yesterday so am not sure that I'll complete any this weekend. June was odd in that it took me until 7/8 June to finish a book but I made up for it later and completed 16 through the month.

Just discovered this. I will be joining this weekend. I started The Chimera Code by Wayne Santos yesterday, which I think is cyberpunk. That's where I'll start this weekend. I work part-time at my day job so I usually have Mondays off anyway, which was especially nice once we went to choosing our own set of holidays each year because I could skip a lot of the traditional/patriotic ones and do ones that matter to me like my birthday or State Fair time or World Figure Skating Championships. I do have contract work that I do on weekends and my writing, but I'm taking them off this weekend. I'm excited to get a bunch of reading done with good company. I'm starting my weekend now (on vacation from my day job), but I do have (personal) phone and Zoom meetings from 7:30-10:30 and I have a social justice documentary to watch today before I lose access to it. Oh, and I have another meeting tonight from 7-8:15 that requires an hour of prep. And I want to get a nap in this afternoon. I think I can still squeak out some solid reading today, but perhaps I'm being overly optimistic. I wish everyone a good reading journey.

I'm in again - currently reading The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien & The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin. Perhaps I'll finally get around to reading another short story from The Year's Best Science Fiction #8 ed. by Gardner Dozois.
15thornton37814
I'll participate but a lot of my reading may be in audiobook format. I needed to start "Lady Liberty" for the American Trilogy Stitch Along. I've got it started but I want a few more stitches in it before I move back to the baby sampler I'm trying to finish ASAP.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons
Book Thoughts: I did more reading this last week than I thought I would. Sitting around in airports gives a person lots of time to read. I finished reading Ruin of Kings in 6 days and it is a 550 page book. I plan on taking it easy this weekend and will spend some time at work but plan on resting and relaxation for the weekend.
Time reading: I read for 1/2 hour at lunch today and wanted to read another 1/2 hour when I came home from work but instead I napped. Sleeping is on my agenda this weekend.
Time posting:
Food: I will make a potato salad and will need to make another batch of stuffed zucchini. I also hope to get a chocolate chip banana cake baked.
Nonbook activities: Swimming and laying around.

Friday - late afternoon. Happy Hour is upon us!
Book:
The Impossible Us. Liking it but slow progress. Spent much of today catching up with Postcrossing.
Only soft food today. : \
Coffee, cream of wheat. Planning on chicken noodle soup for dinner.
Good news is cheek, jaw and mouth feel fine today. No more pain meds!
Other activity:
'Better Call Saul' on tv
watching birds, chipmonks, and a lizard in the yard
tending the needy cat who is by my side always, and right now yowling for dinner still an hour away.
Maybe she needs a little 'alone' time in the bedroom {and I need break.}

Sunday morning update
Books read from: Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Girls by Kate Moore. Mold in Dr. Florey's Coat: The Story of the Penicillin Miracle by Eric Lax. I am reading the short book Rosebud by Paul Cornell. Philida by Andre Brink. I started reading Templar's Last Secret by Martin Walker. I am listening to Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons. Rosebud by Paul Cornell.
Book Thoughts: I read quite a bit in Mold in Dr. Florey's Coat last night and should finish this book today. I am also catching up in my book diary and updating for the last month.
Time reading: an hour last night before bed.
Time posting:
Food: I hope to get that cake baked tonight and will do some other food tomorrow. I ate at the local taco chain store last night - Taco Casa and enjoyed the meal and the reading time.
Nonbook activities: I slept all through the night and feel so much better today. I spent lots of time on the phone yesterday. My sister is traveling down I90 through South Dakota and spent the night last night in Rapid City, SD. This morning she called after she stopped in Sturgis, SD at the Sturgis Coffee Shop for her morning coffee. She also plans to stop at Devil's Tower on her way back to Bozeman where she has lived for the last 8 years. I also spent time on the phone with a friend who has just returned from a trip to Maine. She flew into Portland, ME. Met her daughter there and then drove up the coast through the Maine seaport towns to Acadia National Park. They had planned to go to Campobello but her daughter forgot her passport so couldn't go into Canada. It seems to me that everybody is going to Acadia National Park this year - at least those from this part of the country. My friend is the third person of my acquaintance who has visited Acadia this summer. My friend told me that Bar Harbor has become the Gatlinburg of Acadia. That is such a disappointment. I visited that town 25 years ago and thought it charming and quaint. Apparently it is full of resort hotels hugging the coastline, and all kinds of tourist attractions that have crowded out the town that was. Her description made me think of what Donna Leon describes about Venice in the Guido Brunetti books.

Nonbook activities: Wanted to go to the swimming pool today and got there just in time for it to close due to rain. It rained for about 10 minutes. Just enough to keep the place hot and steamy. Yuck! I hate the summer here in Alabama. I think I will move to Winnipeg when I retire.

Monday night update
Books read from: Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Girls by Kate Moore. Mold in Dr. Florey's Coat: The Story of the Penicillin Miracle by Eric Lax. Philida by Andre Brink. Templar's Last Secret by Martin Walker. I am listening to Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyons. Rosebud by Paul Cornell. Mold in Dr. Florey's Coat: The Story of the Penicillin Miracle by Eric Lax.
Book Thoughts: I finished reading Mold in Dr. Florey's Coat: the Story of the Penicillin Miracle and enjoyed the reading of this book. Anybody who has spent any time at all in academe will understand this book. It is full of academic shenanigans, personal peccadilloes, and underhanded dealings of all kinds that will be instantly recognized by those who work in academe. Who knew that the discovery and distillation of a mold would be the cause of so much skullduggery? Add to that the fact that this book debunks much of the mythology surrounding the discovery of penicillin and the turning of it into the miracle drug that it still is today. For instance, Alexander Fleming might have discovered the penicillin mold, but he did nothing with it after he noticed that it seemed to kill other bacteria. The hard work of learning its properties and turning it into a useful drug was left to others, so the question of if Fleming should have won the Nobel Prize for just a by-the-way, kind of notification about penicillin is a valid question.
It was a very successful 4th of July Read-A-Thon for me.
Time reading: 2 hours today.

Food: Made a perfectly delicious peach and cucumber salad that was a great surprise to the small group of people with whom I celebrated July 4th. It seemed like it was almost a chutney, but it was very refreshing. Perfect fare for a hot summer's day.
Nonbook activities: Wanted to go to the swimming pool today but, once again, it was closed due to rain. I went to my Monday yoga class instead and did yoga to the accompaniment of loud claps of thunder and close by lightening strikes.

Yippee, I got a second book finished, Long Ride Home by Louis L'Amour.
I know it was a reread, but I forget details of his short stories and so they're almost like new reads to me.
I'll be out of town next weekend but will try to stop by anyway. I don't expect to get any reading done, I rarely do when we're on a road trip.

I am about an hour away from finishing Going, Going, Ganache by Jenn McKinlay but I didn't get to it on Monday. I'm pretty distracted because my cousin is near death, and I'm expecting to need to make hotel reservations and pack any time.

Read-a thon start: Friday afternoon Stop: Monday around midnight
It was a holiday weekend here so I counted Monday in with the weekend.
Finished: 2 Brother Cadfael mysteries A Rare Benedictine and Sanctuary Sparrow, continued with reading Caribbean, perused two other books.
Santuary Sparrow also counts as one of the July TIOLI challenges, being the 7th book of a series.
Foods: A good old American BBQ for our Fourth of July celebration with burgers, hot dogs, and bbq ribs, along with other must have for a bbq foods such as potato salad, baked beans, a well stocked cooler with lots of things to drink in the hot 95 F (35 C) weather. We set up three canopies for shade in the yard, the grands splashed in the kiddie pool, we played yard games and badminton, and a fun game called Sushi Go.
Non book activities: Attended the town parade, but there was an unfortunate accident with a youth participating in the parade after falling from one of the floats and run over, pretty awful, so the parade was terminated. A horrible accident and very sad indeed. We've never had such a tragedy in the 22 years we've lived here. A go fund account was set up for the family and quickly filled with thousands of donations for medical expenses by well wishers but unfortunately the youth did not recover, at least the funeral will be paid for but at a horrific cost in grief. :(
Picked the ripe sweet cherries from our tree, and made cherry turnovers, snacked on some, and processed and preserved the rest into bottles for cherry pie filling to be used later for more yummy treats.
